Cam degreeing help me understand!

This is correct provided you are referencing the correct dots. 2 crank turns(720*)=1 cam turn(360*). So rotating crank 180*= 90* on cam, which jives. Same ratio.
Yes that is the overlap if I done it correctly it still is retarded even with the other timing chain. So when I start with the compression tdc #1 the dots will be at 12 and 6 so when I rotate it 180 degrees the cam dot is now at 3 o'clock position is that correct? Thats how I did it and its still retarded.

Think YR ment to say 360° instead of 180°, that puts the lifters in the right position to see if they are "Straight Up", Advanced, or Retarded.

Same way you checked it when you found the camshaft timing sprocket miss marked problem.
 
Yes. 112 LSA in at 4* advanced should come up at 108* ICL. Once you get a good timing set, it might be there without any changes.

Everyone is contributing good info. What I find interesting is when they are advancing their cams by 4° they are working usually with the 3 keyway lower cam gear and turning the lower gear to the next keyway to get the 4° Advance, simple enough.

So when his upper much larger camshaft sprocket was miss marked by just one tooth that sent the actual Cam out of time by as much as 20° just by being 1 tooth off.

So the thing is the lower gear is driving the cam like a gear reduction taking many turns to turn the camshaft. Where as the upper larger Camshaft Sprocket is direct drive taking very little movement to turn the Camshaft many degrees.

So this is why it was so critical that he caught this upper Camshaft Sprocket Miss Marked problem.

The crank only turns twice to the camshaft's once. I sure am glad, cause I couldn't keep up with "many".

Thanks bud. I have learned alot especially the importance of checking the lifter location and degreeing the cam even if your installing it straight up. I would have never imagined in a million years a company would would let something get like that slip thru. Im almost willing to spend the 22 dollars again to buy another identical one just to see if its the same way or correct. Once I get all the problems with my degree process sorted out im gonna stick it back in there and check it again just to see how far off it really is and how far I was off in my process initially. Inquiring mind man! Lol. I may put the wheel back in and set it up again in the morning with the used timing chain to see where its at. I can tell just by the position of the lifters that Its closer I still don't think it's exactly right tho im suppose to be 2 degrees btdc @.50 just watching it during rotation it appears to me that it is just starting to move at or right at tdc still closer than it was before I wasn't getting any movement until atdc.

My Rollmaster set was just as bad and "supposedly" it's supposed to be the best.
 
What were you sold as a gear set? IF the top gear is for a POLY engine they are market exactly 1 tooth off, in comparison to an LA! This could have been a mixed bag of parts in your gear set.

Well there you have it! Zoom in on the part #'s of engintechs top gear and it's got both the "S402", this fits an LA and it's also stamped "S296" this fits a POLY, they are not the same! Take that **** back and get a real set of gears!

Hmm that is interesting I never thought of it. I guess it's their way of saving money multiple fit items with the same machine setup. I learned my lesson on trying to save money! I just hope my valves and pushrods hold up lol. I'm looking at three different sets now I will decide on one and get it ordered. Its gonna be a few weeks tho im broke atm! I just learned im gonna have to buy a radiator too! Just great! Anyone need a kidney? I got one for sale! Haha!
 
I have a whole set of used hydraulic lifters I kept for that purpose. Lol my plan was to gut one filling it full of washers and weld a old pushrod in it. But I kinda like the wood dowel idea now. I may try both.
Just curious. What spec are you degreeing your cam to? How many degrees plus or minus will be close enough? How do you plan to change it if needed?

I will take a pick of the sprocket side by side with the other one in the morning so we can see the location relative to another brand. You can really see it when they are on top of each other with the keys lined up. Like I pictured this morning.

Yeah that is really disgusting that that even happened, who knows why ?

Now it is obvious person has to check and double chech everything as it is all going together.

Man made stuff, someone marked it wrong. The guy marking them was texting on his phone when he should have been paying attention to where he was putting that timing mark.

New age work place problems. Geeze !
 
Reviving this great thread. This is my first go at cam degreeing. Street only 5.9 Magnum with factory 1.6 stamped rockers and .030 factory replacement pistons. Installed a brand new dampener and checked verified TDC using both positive stop and dial indicator +/-.050 methods. Off by 3 degrees and ordered timing tape. Set degree wheel at true TDC for these readings. Looking at measurments it appears that my grind is off by 4 degrees. I am using a Comp true roller billet 3 way adjustable (+/- 4 deg) timing kit installed dot to dot with NO play. I really wanted to install this cam advanced 4 degrees however it looks like that 4 degrees advanced will only get me to cam card spec. Next step is to advance 4 degrees and remeasure. Does this look right to you guys? What are my options for advancing beyond the 4 degree make up advance? A 9 way timing set? I do have a spare 3 way double roller crank gear in 4 degree increments (mine is in 2 deg) but it's made by Cloyes.

Thanks YR. I'll post a picture of the full Cam Card (actually regrind sheet) tonight. Any thoughts on my ideas to advance the cam given my measured numbers?
