Shipping

I got some very good advice this year. I shipped a 62-64 D100 grille this year and since it was steel I packed it and shipped UPS. It came to the buyer bent like a pretzel. I was pissed, but not a lot I could do about it. I then sold a 61 D100 grille which is thin aluminum factory riveted together. I was going to build a wooden box the could only be crushed by a forklift running over it. The buyer said take it to a UPS store and pay for them to box it up! I thought about it and realized what he said, that if THEY pack it they are 100% responsible for it and will be MUCH more careful when it ships! It got to the buyer Illinois to California in perfect shape! If I ever ship another valuable fragile part, I WILL do it the same way! It cost $80 for them to pack it, then what it cost to ship and the buyer paid for it so he would get a good part...

Spend some money on it...if they got a '70 cuda, they can afford it

:poke:

When I need to ship stuff in this size/shape category, I get a bicycle box from the local pedal store. They are extremely tough triple wall cardboard.

HaHaHaHaHa Are you NUTS, I bought a 340 6 pack set up complete with air cleaner from Cal. When I got it it was junk. The guy did just that took it to a UPS Store and had them box it and ship it. They wrapped the air cleaner in bubble wrap, wrapped the carbs and intake in bubble wrap carbs bolted to intake with the air cleaner studs sticking out and put them in the same box side by side. When I got it the box was round every corner smashed the air cleaner was smashed the carb studs were bent one carb broke, the one corner of the intake was sticking out of the box and looked like someone drug it down the road. UPS told me the stores are all independently owned they have no responsibility. I tried to file a claim but UPS said the purchaser of the insurance has to file the claim, that is the seller. So I had to call him and he filed the claim got the check and cashed it. UPS said oh well that is illegal and you have to sue him. I would have to get a lawyer from Cal to do that. I bought it from Ebay and had them involved the whole time and they finally gave me all my money back but FU*K UPS I will never use them again no mater how far out of my way I have to go.

I would make a wooden crate and secure the grille to the crate and wrap it in bubble wrap then put the top of the crate on and bolt the two halves together it will be pricey but its better than getting a busted grille or further more having to give a refund for a busted grille

Sucks to be you, I have had more issues NOT using UPS to pack it than the other way and I ship literally TONS of parts every year! I don't have to put a disclaimer on every post I make that "your experience may vary" but it DOES! Why doesn't the OP contact Vans Auto and see how they pack their repop 70-71 Cuda grilles and how many of them get destroyed...

I just hope nobody has to go through what I did to try to get this problem fixed and UPS has never tried to help at all. I have had problems with all but FedEx has been the best over all. UPS the worst. Hope no one ever has to file a claim with UPS, You will know what I mean. Every box I get from UPS is smashed in one way or another, FedEx almost never a dent. They must be doing something different.

Kim I use the moving blankest from HF in a sturdy box, so far so good.

I was thinking same thing. Make sure its low expansion and leave box lid open till it cures.
George's idea with sonotube is great idea, I've shipped parts in carpet roll tubes as well.
I just finished doing our fence and sonotube are cheap, different diameters and usually priced by the foot.
10" sonotube was under $2/per foot.
You may wanna check with Canada post to see the max amount it can be insured for.
Wrap the grill in heavy plastic, put it in the box and get a can of expanding foam.

I would never trust anyone else to pack parts for shipping for me.. they don't know what they are dealing with and aren't "invested" in it. A grill is light but fragile so you'll need sturdy boxing (as you have said you have) but lightweight packing material, you'll want to make sure it's packed in well enough that it doesn't move around at all and that the box allows for at least 4" on all sides. I would bubble wrap it using a good quality painters tape to keep it in place. Maybe use wood slats on the bubble wrap to further reinforce the piece..??, and then a combination of those air-bags and "peanuts" or even more bubble wrap. Shipping is a tough thing sometimes but considering the value of the piece, I would err on the very safe side.

Yes, it's a bad time right now to ship fragile merchandise these shippers are not taken care of the inventory...trust me...crate only!!

I did just that with a Duster grill and bezels using USPS. The buyer got the grill cracked and tab broken. When he got it was packaged well, so they went out of their way to damage it. Filed a claim because it was insured, claim denied because the Post Office he took the damaged box too did not do any paper work! Filed an appeal yesterday, will have to wait and see.
NEVER USE USPS AGAIN!

Thanks guys for all the idea’s and warnings. I have used a few of these idea’s. Just seeing if there is a better idea then what I was thinking. I wouldn’t want this grill to crack/break even though it’s far from perfect. Kim

I have seen these posts for every carrier out there over the years. They all have a bunch of people who could care less about your package. Im pretty sure they get together with each other and play soccer with our packages.
Its only getting worse now that they are shipping more than they can handle. They contract out a lot of the shipping and those guys really dont give a f**k.
