so I'm on the search of a very rare car and I have a couple leads in Canada.

But that brings to mind, what is the paperwork process to getting a car over the border into Montana and getting the papers transferred to Colorado.

Anyone with a similar experience??

It was much simpler year ago. I flew into Canada and drove a 383 GTS out.

Paperwork was easy.

I imported a 69 rr and exported a 62 Savoy a couple years back. It was pretty easy. Was. Paperwork to the U.S. was basic, but involved. I do know I had to supply current ownership for him. This was to Idaho. I think it has all changed drastically in the last couple years though. When I get home next week I can dig through paperwork and refresh my memory.

I would call the port of entry you plan to use. Both of the ports I have been to were staffed by US customs and their Canadian counterparts in the same office or building. What does Colorado require you to do to register a Canadian car?

There are two papers to fill out at the border crossing when you return that they will provide, that's it. Just have the title and bill of sale. The car needs to be 25 years old or there is EPA issues I've been told, also it needs to have been made in the US or there may be a problem. I have bought a couple there a few years ago from Ontario into NY. Customs are usually helpful if you call, they just check that the vin and title match on reentry. More than 10k cash needs to be declared, do not hide it and try to go over, you may lose it.

Not sure how it works going from Canada to US, BUT to make things easier make sure to use a Port of Entry that deals with importing vehicles. MAKE SURE ITS 24 HOUR ALSO. Not all are.
I've brought a few back and like George said minimal paperwork but must be done properly and done in advance(72 hrs). Covid has changed everything. Make some calls.

Montana is the border that George (gdrill) used for his transactions.
He would be the one to talk to.
So, are you thinking of buying the Canadian '71 340 Swinger column auto orange with scoops Crosstown Edmonton car from Red Deer, Alberta?
P.M. me is you want more info on the car and the guy who owns it.
Caveat Emptor is all I can say.

Well, sounds like there’s a good story there on a rare A body! Do tell!

Nothing as exciting as that.... the rare car in question is a Lada.

USMACA is now in affect. Not sure what the requirements are.

Yup, google is a great source of information. Clicking on a government link is your best source of information instead of asking folks what might have worked when they imported a car 15 or 3 years ago.

Once you’ve read the government site, then ask questions on a detail but it would be best to actually ask the agency or department that will give the final say.

Maybe I want to hear others experiences, should be some good stories or there.

Maybe not exciting to you but I've always wanted one since I was a kid and it seems now is the time to make a move because they are rapidly going up in value and price.

I imported my Barracuda also from Canada, paperwork has to be done correctly and money declared at the border. There are some good articles about it, but I also called the border custom office in advance and asked for some details. The seller was absolutely trustworthy and quite helpful, he had everything perfectly prepared. If you want more information about the documents I had, sent me a PM.

Cheers,
Wolfgang

One thing for sure when crossing the border going into Canada is to be truthful. You’ll be shuffled off to a room where you’ll be asked questions. You would be surprised what they know about you. The Databases of the two countries are shared. Also, if they find anything suspicious get ready for a full inspection. Buddy of mine had a loose 9mm round in his glove box, they found it and from then on they wanted to know where the gun was. At the end they weren’t satisfied and he was denied entrance. Had to turn around and go back through the US entrance. Guess what, they too wanted to know where the gun was.

Make is so then.

If you really want to do something, then the effort level you put in will reflect that.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

Just remember when you floor an American V8 the sound it makes is WWwwwwwaaaa WWWwwwwaaaaa but the Canadian car will go EEEeehhhhhhhhhhh EEEEehhhhhhhhhh
