Hi all,

A little while ago I purchased a 17 gallon oil drain tank to use for fluid changes under my two post lift. It is almost time to empty it so that I can take the used fluids (oil, coolant, gas, etc.) to my local automotive fluid disposer.

What does everyone use as a container for their used fluids? I've found the small 3 gallon oil recycle jugs online but I'd prefer to have them a little larger so that I wont have so many of them sitting around.

Thanks

I use a drain pan/oil container I got from oreilly. This one.

It's only 6 gallons so it's easy to carry. I imagine 17 gallons is a ***** to tote around.
Yeah, it looks like this. I'd have to pump it into smaller containers for transport.

I use washer fluid 1 gallon containers.

Ease to carry and I don't care if I get them back.

We have a county disposal near by so it is super convenient.

Yea I need to take mine in also, I use these cube containers that a lot of detail shops discard. Most of them will have a hole punched in the lid but sometimes you can finde sealed ones.

5 gallons

I am currently using the yellow 5 gallon buckets that kitty litter comes in. I'm concerned about how long it'll hold up to fluids like oil and gasoline

I think they will hold up ok but the thing with those is sometimes the handle straps pop out, and when you dump them the fluid always wants to cling to the side. I mean....so I've heard

Im I the only one that puts it back in the new oil jug and saves it for my lawn mower?:D

I have four metal 5 gallon lacquer thinner cans with a screw on lid and carry handle. I made a metal funnel contraption that attaches to the top bead of the can with 4 thumb screws. It has a built in old chrysler 2.2 dipstick to check the level in the 5 gallon container its attached to. The check stick has a small drill hole where the full point is in the can so I can see how full it is. After I dump the oil in just let the filter lay in there. Have a clip on the wall holding the drain pan to drip itself dry into the funnel.

Check with your citys recycle center. My city recycle center takes the waste oil, oil filters, car batteries, and used antifreeze for free. They also take the recyclable plastic oil and antifreeze containers. Theres a clipboard with a form and a pen tethered to it attached to a huge fiberglass tank for the oil, and another fiberglass tank for the antifreeze both with funnels. They take it all for free to help prevent it ending up in the local landfill. I only have to list my address and the number of quarts, gallons, filters etc that was dropped off.

Heres pix

I have the same one what I do is pump it into a 30 gallon drum and once a year bring it in.

Years ago I had a buddy that worked as a mechanic at a local garage and they use the used oil from oil changes for their heat. They have some sort of special furnace that burns used motor oil im sure its not very environmental friendly lol but anyway they had this huge plastic tank they would just pour it in and use it for the furnace which imo is smart that's free heat for them since they do a tone of oil changes. So for years I would save my oil until I got 3 or 4 gallons and take it to them and for their heater. Quick and easy disposal for me and free heat for them. Well the garage went under new management and my buddy quit but I knew the owner so I kept taking my oil there one day I dropped off probably 4 gallon jugs and this new mechanic came by and said what are you doing? I said oh I'm just dropping my oil off for the heater, he said oh that will cost you a disposal fee! I said what?? Your gonna charge me for giving you free heat? Your full of ****! So I basically said efff you and loaded up my oil and never went back. Crazy how these garages will try and make a profit off anything! I have a pretty good friend that runs a tire shop he always cuts me a good deal on mount and balancing. He charges 10 bucks for tires disposal then turns around and then turns around and sells the used tires for 50 each if their usable. Not a bad gig gets paid 60 bucks each for used tires plus the cost of the new ones and labor! Sorry I got a little off topic! Hehe

Also "if you are lucky" in your area check the want ads or put one up. Sometimes you can find an individual or shop who takes waste oil for the shop heater.

Is that the seal that was eaten almost immediately by a killer whale ?
no idea, just grabbed one from on line...although if i was a killer whale, that one would probably look pretty tasty

A friend of mine has a local repair shop that burns oil for heat, I take it to him.
Which reminds me, I have about 5 gallons to take to him, I just put the used oil back in the 5qt container that the new oil came out of.

A friend works at a restaurant, he gives me the empty fry oil containers that they would normally toss.
Same as those cube containers but have a cardboard box around them.

I heat my shop with it. Have a 400 gallon plastic tank. Get oil from friends and coworkers. Go through maybe 5 or 6 hundred gallons a year

My buddy heats his shops and house with used oil. Gives me a 45 gallon drum to fill. My oil drain is 15 gallons, i roll it up onto my hoist and drain it into drum. I give him maybe 5 drums a year.

i used to fill 5 gallon pails and take it to the hazardous waste collection depot. They still get my oil containers and used antifreeze.
