I have a 1977 440 with flat tappet hydraulic cam is there any oil out there off the shelve with the required ZDDP to run in this engine? If not what would be a safe conventional oil and what is a good additive that I could use that is readily available again off the shelve?

Thank you in advance...

Type zddp or zinc in the search box above on the right and hold on tight. There are tons of discussions about the subject.

I just buy a bottle of it to add to the oil in my flat tappet engines. I am not sure now but in the past 15W40 oil for diesels still had it.

I use Lucas Hot Rod and Classic oil in all my stuff.

I use VR-1 10w-30. All the zinc you need. Shop for best pricing.

So is Rislone ZDDP treatment

I believe STP oil treatment is loaded up with zink. Last time I checked.
yes, I have a couple cars I just add STP to conventional oil. Blue bottle that says "zinc" on it. Something like 2.49 at Walmart. Rislone as well. I also have used MaxxZDDP additive bought online. Never an issue with any of it.

Yes, it is a good sourcs of ZDDP, BUT and take this to the bank, the store off brand IS NOT! So make sure not to try to pinch pennies gettin the off brand. Even though it comes in a very similar blue bottle it does not have ZDDP in it. I was shocked when I looked at the ingredients of each on the shelf when I worked at O'Reilly.

Zinc oil has been covered in many previous threads. Some guys even broke it down where too much ZDDP was not always best.
My engine builder stands by Valvoline VR1, 10w30.
Thats good enough for me.

I just did some searching online about cam break-in. Lucas additive and oil had high percentages along with VR-1. Also do not use a detergent oil.

I run Summit's own ZDDP branded 10W30 or 10W40. Very happy with it. At one time, their oil was just private labeled Kendall. Of course I only live 6 miles from the Ohio store so it's convenient! LOL

Mobil 1 lists specs for all their products and several still have zddp.

That, and now is a great time to switch to roller cam.

Unfortunately it's not project farm did a video on stp he sent it off to a lab for testing and it didn't have much of anything. He tried it against stp from the 70s and it was alot better but the new stuff is basically thick oil. I will try to find the video and post it

As much as I have into my motor not going to try and play chemist and mix and match... I just use a quality penn grade and call it a day...

will do thank you

I prefer a bottle with it blended correctly from people who know what they're doing than some back yard oil mixing, haven't had any trouble in several year's with vr-1 and neither has anyone else that i know who use's it.

Shell Rotella T-1 SAE 30 HD tractor oil is loaded with zinc.
