I had a lot of steering issues and discovered my idler arm had a HEAP of up and down movement...I shipped a brand new Moog arm out to Australia, fitted it and although better, its not as firm as I had hoped. The bush end of the arm fits in the notch ok, it came with foam style rings that I fitted both ends and tightened it up... still has some up and down movement...Am I missing something here? Is this common and is there a fix?

Some come with a 1/8 to 1/4 inch washer or spacer. Is it loose within the actual bracket or the sleeve where the bolt slides through?

There used to be a repair kit out there to fix this. I got 2 of em, but also got 2 cars i will keep these kits for just in case. Its a moog problem solver kit. It replaces everything inside that arm on that end at the k frame with a double ball bearing setup, along with a tube spacer, some thrust washers, and i believe a hollow bolt with a grease fitting, a nut, and cotter pin. This kit is no longer made. The boxes mine came in were tattered brown cardboard, looked old, and were falling apart. I think i payed $20 per kit off evilbay about 10 years ago. They are buried on the shelving unit i have full of parts for my 2 builds. Therefore i wont be able to find the part number. The nice thing w these kits is when the arm wears out, you can transfer the kit over to a new arm.

Also moog isnt the brand it used to be. Once their manufacturing moved overseas, their quality went to crap. If your car has headers, it will quickly melt the nylon pieces in your new idler arm. You may be able to make something up with press in sealed bearing race assemblies and spacers, or you may want to look into XRF brand chassis parts. They are a little heard of canadian company that sell only to repair shops, not retail stores, so theres no push from retail chains to make the parts "cheaper". I picked up complete front end joints for both project cars from them, and found a 68-72 idler arm by XRF on closeout at rockauto.com. for $11.20 i needed it for the 69 i have so i bought it. There are a few more left at that closeout price. Read the consumer reviews on XRF parts. They are comparable in cost to moog or ac delco but nuch better made.

I found that it needed the steel washers. I have a 67 but I put in a 68 K frame.

That's a good tip about the XRF parts.

Not sure Scooby, Ill get a better look Saturday as its on my buddys hoist while the 360 is out...Moparmat, we have kits here for Australian Valiants that are highly sought after for the reasons you suggested...fairly thin on the ground also....Im more disappointed I have to modify brand new parts to make them work properly but I want the old girl to behave while Im driving...Ill look at some spacers first...the idler I took off was ok on the end just also loose in the bush so I might be able to press some bearings in...Shouldnt be too hard to make something work...Thank guys

Thats true, you shouldent have to modify a new part. Can you get stuff from rockauto.com shipped to you? At the very worst, look up the XRF idler arm for 68 dart or barracuda since sometimes their catalog wont cross over between dodge or plymouth. I dunno what $11.20 in U.S. funds exchanges to in OZ dollars. Or the shipping either. A few months back that XRF idler arm was on closeout for $9.20 i grabbed it then knoeing the quality.

Found my 2 long discontinued idler arm repair kits. Moog K-7009 Heres pix. I am keeping these. They are not for sale, since i have 2 cars these 2 kits will be going on, but this should help somebody out researching this PN to find one.

Hope this helps
Matt

No prob. I'm sure theres still some of these out there. An old mopar circle track racer buddy of mine put me wise to these years ago. Actually one of the first purchases i made for my 67. Figured at the time they were cheap on evilbay so i bought 2.

I bet mid -canada suspension has some on the shelf.

Dumb question....pulled this thing apart today and the sleeve through the bush looks to be the only thing that contacts the inside of the bracket, there are some foam washers that come with the idler but they would offer no stability...I dont have a washer but that leads me to this question...If I DO have the washer, how will it support the arm in the bracket when it looks like the the only solid contact is the ends of the crush tube...Im lost here

There's should be 2 foam washers to keep the grease contained and one steel washer to take up the slack in the mount. Is the sleeve currently tight within the bracket or is there play?

Looked like the bottom of the mount had been bent up so straightened that...seems firm in there and Im not sure how the washer will work when only the crushtube touches the inner of the bracket

Does this repair kit work on other A Body cars? Specifically, 1972 Dart Swinger. Thanks. These repair kits can still be ordered from Advance Auto Parts, takes about a week. $36

What repair kits exactly are you talking about? I mean, Moog, XRF, other? Part number?
