I decided to go for it and pull the engine from my 1969 A108 Van. I read in the service manual to drop it from the bottom with the tranny attached. Now I'm stuck! The tranny will not drop from the rear support after removing the bolt. It seems like there is a bushing holding it in place! What do you suggest?
1) Re-attach engine mounts and try to drop tranny by itself?
2) Remove radiator and fan and try rocking engine/tranny as one unit to break it free from the rear bushing?
3) Re-attach engine mounts, drop tranny by itself then pull engine from passenger side door?

Currently all the doghousing/shroud is removed from around the engine in the van except the front piece with the radiator.

Ideas??

Man, I came out the door with /6 and back in the door with the 390 stroker on A100. I suppose there is an awful lot of room there to come out the bottom. Can you take a floor jack , or engine lift through the door and lift the engine back up and maybe take some bind off of it? If the back mount is jammed up now, it probably wont be easy to take the trans off separate. Should pry out

Since I am so close to dropping it from the bottom I'll give it another try tomorrow but if that doesn't work I think I can get it back in the engine mounts and then try out the door. What a pain.... I also want to come back in with a 390 stroker!

my way

Not to sound smartass, but this is a 1969 model vehicle. It's like Fred Flintstone compared to new cars. They are EASY to figure out. Yes, it's probably stuck in that top bracket, but how do we know that? You've supplied no pictures. You may as well have asked hay guy is my girlfriend hot? ....and not supplied any pictures. You're here askin for help. The easier you make it for US to help YOU the better your answers are going to be.

Now, going on memory, that's some kind of through bolt biscuit mount, right? They can get stuck from compression when that bolt is tightened down, so a pry bar might be your best friend. But this is just a GUESS, as we cannot SEE exactly what you're working on, or what you're talking about.

I think we know it's stuck in the top bracket above the rear of the transmission because I said it was stuck. Sorry- being a smart ***....
My question was if anyone had any tips to help- and I got some. Do I need to force it out or try to reinstall the engine and pull the tranny separate or even through the doors like many have suggested?

Here's some pics I just took for you ;)

I said a pry bar. Twice now. Thanks for the picture. Now we know for sure what we're all talking about.

Will try again tomorrow when the sun is up. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Just slightly pry open from each side those frame “tabs” but It’s highly probable that the rubber bushing is fused to the sides of the plates and might require a sacrificial putty knife to be used as a chisel, hammer it in each side to split the rubber away from the metal.

Thanks for posting pics. I never seen that set up as I’ve never pulled a tranny on 1 of them. Kim

Me either. I suspected what it looked like, because I have seen one of those transmissions. I think from here on out, I'm going to flat out skip threads with no pictures and stop asking. People ask for help and when asked for pictures they get all smartass when they should have posted the damned pictures first. And it's funny, I always keep going back to help with never a thanks. I think going into the new year there's gonna be a new less caring me.

I feel ur pain. If they can’t post a pic, ask for help. I had to ask for help. I got it right away from a member that walked me thru the whole thing on my I phone. Kim
