We are converting my son's 71 Valiant from SB with 904 trans to a 727... We are having trouble getting the shift linkages working...

Does anybody have pictures comparing the parts to see what's different from a 904 vs a 727 column shift linkage???

I know the z-bar is different and the linkage rod that goes to it from the steering column to the bar, but is the rod that goes from the z-bar to the trans lever or trans lever different or not????

I've done this, but don't remember all of what's different. However, besides the Z bar, I do remember that the Z-bar mounting bracket on the trans is different.

4th pic left side is 727.

The last pic , That part is hard to find,

Thanks!!!

I did buy a full 727 setup from a guy and that's what they look like... The bracket that comes off the trans is different and the linkage rod that connects to it and I think that's where most of our problem is... Our problem is that we cannot get enough adjustment for it to get into park... I sis notice that the linkage rod that came in the full 727 set had more of a bend to it, but looks close to the same length...

We did get the Z-bar and first linkage from someone, but were not aware that the rest was different also...

Ok, now I think I know what we need to finish it, I need another trans bracket and the rod that connects to it as the complete set that I bought is for his brother's car...

Thanks for the replies guys....

Thanks for the reply, good info...

From what Oldmanmopar posted it looks like the rest of the linkage is different from 904 also and I need to get a trans bracket and the linkage that goes from the trans bracket to the z-bar...

When i put the 440/727 combo in my 1972 dart, i just went to the salvage yard and found a mid 70's big block cordoba and crawled under it and just got all the linkage and brackets from that car and bolted it all right up to the dart and worked just like it was made with it!!

Weird, man. I stuck a 727 into my 67 and the floor shifter out of the 904 seemed to work just fine. Never occurred to me it was "different." I don't remember, tho on kickdown, as it was not long before I went manual VB and then shortly after, Cheetah after a brief stop with Hurst.

Karl, none of the A bodies I ever owned never had the trans bracket in the last pic. Kim

I found out that you have to change that bracket from 904 to 727 because the mount on the trans is in a different location and the z-bar will be crooked if you use the 904 90° bracket on the 727...

The 727 needs the bracket with the jog in it... The 727 is larger in this area than the 904...

Del, Consol stuff works for both trannies. Kim

Yes, I had a 72 Challenger back in the 80's that we converted from 318/904 to 340/727 and all of the console linkages were interchangeable... So I assumed that the column shift linkages would interchange... But I was wrong....

Everything seems to be different on column shift from 904 to 727... :BangHead:

Right now we have the proper 727 z-bar and first linkage rod, but we are having trouble getting it into park and being able to start it... I bought a complete linkage for a 727 for the other kid's Valiant conversion and found out that the other linkage rod and trans bracket are different as well... :BangHead:

Thanks for all of the replies guys... Keep them coming...
