In that case, I wouldn't go really big on the diameter. Maybe 1" or 1 1/8" at the most. I just put an 1 1/8" front bar on my 64 Valiant and I like how it drives. It might would be a little stiff for some people but I like how it really flattens the car out going around turns. Going to put the rear on next.
