These cranks are known for this exact type of failure and it is probably accurate to say that this crank has a poor design and subgrade metalurgical properties. Also I believe the harmonic balancer was installed cocked and was "driven" home from my conversation with the owner. Like I said a comedy of errors--only there isn't really anything funny about it.
