List of Best Street Performance Camshafts for "340-360"

Around here the comp XE 262 and 268 are very popular for street machines.

This thread kinda reminds me of the guys that go hunting and fishing around here and the first thing they load into the truck is four cases of beer.

I like the way you guy's think out there.

Right out of the 'Compu-Cams Catalog', they are listed as
'Street Performance Camshafts'.

XE-262-H.....Excellent Response
XE-268-H.....Great Street Machine

XE-262-H
Lift........................ .462"/.470"
Duration................. 262*/270*
Duration @ .050".... 218*/224*
LSA........................ 110*
CL.......................... 106*
Range.................... 1300 - 5600 RPM's

XE-268-H
Lift........................ .477"/.480"
Duration............... 268*/280*
Duration............... 224*/230*
LSA...................... 110*
CL........................ 106"
Range.................. 1600 - 5800 RPM's

Both work well with 'stock' 340 Valve Springs {#240 lb. Load-Rate w/Valve-Open}

And are compatible with a 'Stock Converter'.

That said, I bypassed the XE lineup for my build and went with the Voodoo 60304 for my street machine.
9.2:1 static
Ch4b intake
Tri y headers
Template ported factory 902 heads with triple angle and stock valve sizes

Cam specs,
276/284 adv
234/242 @50
513/533 lift
110 lobe sep.
106 center line
2200-6400 rpm range.

Probably a step above street machine cam as head work is needed for the springs and guides. But mine is for a 440, so it shouldn't be too aggressive for street driving. The small block version has the same specs.

Oh, I forgot you're from Idaho..........

I hear Idahoans have to 'pack-a-lunch' on their way to go to McDonalds.

that's not funny... the nearest mcdonalds is 55miles from me. I do pack a lunch!

Lol... You're pretty close I think - this is more of a benchracing discussion as any build is an individual choice based on the rest of the package and use.

How about this old MP stick, P4529959,497/497,
Dur @50 244.8/244.8, 108 cl.
Was thinking of using this in my teen that has a 340 rotating assembly?

66 Dartman,

That is a 'strong' Hydraulic Camshaft

Lift.......................... .497"
Duration.................. 288*
Duration @ .050"..... 245*
Centerline............... 108*
RPM Range............. 2400 - 6500 RPM's

It was a popular choice too, especially for 4-Speeds.

Kind of reviving a old thread here but curious about what cam to go with a pretty stock 360. The motor came out of a 1979 Chrysler Newport. It is going my international short bed with a dodge Dakota frame. The 360 now has a edelbrock dual plane aluminum intake, 600CFM Holley vacuum secondary carb, headers, backed by a 904 transmission, and 3.55 sure grip axle. Currently has a stock torque convertor but if need be I can change that before I put it in. This is a street truck and will never be raced but I want to have some power. I am looking for a cam that I don't have to change a lot with. If I have to change springs that is fine but I don't want to have to do head work. Any help is appreciated.

Crane H-278-2 467/494 lift. This is a good powerful street cam. Not sure if still around but better than comp junk.

Examples of “Comp junk” (LMAO!) that will work. The lesson that should be taken away with here is the cam has to work with the converter and with the vehicles weight. The other thing is the springs may need some simple head work to fit. Pay attention to the cams durations @ .050 and limit the lift.

This is the largest cam I would put in a engine with a stock converter.
COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts 20-222-3
Or
COMP Cams High Energy Camshafts 20-212-2
You MIGHT be able to get away with this one it it pushes it a little bit.
COMP Cams Magnum Muscle Camshafts 20-309-4
Reason being the late ‘70’s stock stall might be a bit tight for the duration of the cam even with the 3.55’s.

Do I need new valve springs to run the cams listed above? What stall convertor should I look into?

The 340 in my dart has the .508 / 292 purpleshaft in it. Runs great with a 3800 convertor and 4.10 gears. Very fun.
I run the same cam. It runs nice and sounds awesome! Many here don't like it. But I think its great. I run it in a 360 dart sport. 3.91's out back. 3400-3600 FTI 9.5" converter.

On stock short block 360’s?
Do you guys take it to the track and how do you do?

Mine is a stock 360 KB107'S. 30 over. Stock X-heads with crane springs. 850 thermoquad on top of a Victor 340 intake. No track time for mine. Just fun street cruiser for now. Runs well.

That is an absolute excellent grind. I've used it several times and I call it the "Crane magic cam" because it works so well.

OK. Cool, BUT! Punisher66 did make the notation below.
He said “Pretty stock 360. While it may or may not have replacement pistons, I think replacing the pistons removes it from that description as well as this engine is going into a truck, not an A body. Your answer doesn’t fit his description or needs. It does however sound like a fun runner. I had the same short block with a LD-340 w/MP mods done to it. It probably lacked your top end! But it was indeed fun.
