As for the 340s being intentionally strangled, that’s not true, they were large valve high comp 69/70 build engines (installed in 72-74 model cars) no doubt that a better exhaust and non std cam would have helped
A single Exhaust, no LSD and a 727, dumped in a 770 is strangled compared to what the 265 got in the R/T. Which was a tuned triple webber 265, close ration 4 speed, HD suspension, Brake proportion valve, LSD etc.
So yeh, strangled. Even then it was a close match. Give the 340 half of what the 265 got in the R/T and the 265 would not be the legend it is today.
