Maybe I'm a maroon, but how does the pushrod come out? Shouldn't it just pull out? I mean it spins, but wont release. If I give up and just buy a new one (which is looming) where can I find a replacement w/boot?

Ahem. "Tapping" it did not work.

Ouch... that puppy's TIGHT. Soak the rod end in PB Blaster or your penetrant of choice- I usually clamp the MC in a vise and put a length of rod through the end of the pushrod, work it around and give it a few good yanks. It usually pops out, some easier than others. Yours is pretty crusty, obviously will take more effort.

Well, at least you didn't say "hey dumb@ss, there is a release screw" or something like that. I clamped it and put a pipe through the hole and beat on it nine ways from Sunday with increasing ferocity. Its currently soaking in PB and some mystery lube in my finger pump can, however I'm beginning to think a new one will be in order shortly.

The prof. is correct. The "square" rubber "O" ring is now old, hard and unwilling to move. It may take real effort to pry it out. I try to get some leverage to pry it out. When it finally pops out you will understand why.

Well, you broke one 'ear' off it, so have a little more fun and 'whittle' it down - being fragile cast-iron. (wear face shield)

Clamp the rod in a vice leaving enough space between the side of the vice and the body of the master cylinder. Use a BIG screw driver or pry bar to lever the master cylinder off the rod.

The retaining ring is rubber. probably hard as a rock.
You could burn it out but it will stink.

Clue: You don't care about the old master, right?

I'm going through this exact same thing on my 65 Valiant. However, on mine, the MC piston came out with pushrod. So now I have to get the piston off the rod. Will probably grind/cut it off.

But try a pry bar and a vise first :)

I did the same once. A few shims and my ball joint splitter separated it. So thats what I use to begin with now. Never had one so tough that I had to hammer the splitter. Just used it as pry bar between shims and vise.

Interesting that the piston didn't come out of the bore. I think nothing is holding it in but rust, which can be severe between aluminum and iron. I would use heat to melt the rubber. I just had the same problem removing a toilet seat. I couldn't unscrew the plastic nut on the bottom. After fussing upside down with visegrips and prybars, my wife said, "melt it" so I remembered my tiny butane torch from Harbor Freight which made quick work of it.

Most manual MC's I have seen come with the brake rod, dust bellows, and plate. If you can still get a refund, I wouldn't use that cast-iron MC. Those tops notoriously slosh out brake fluid and let moisture in to cause internal rust. I prefer a modern aluminum MC w/ well-sealed reservoir. Lighter and doesn't rust to ugly. You need a 2-4 bolt adapter plate ($30 ebay). Many here use a 1980's Dodge truck aluminum MC. I used a 1998 Breeze ABS one. Booster Dewey sells as a kit for ~$95 (many posts).

Im just going to bump this instead of a new thread. I never was able to get these apart. I plan to buy a new one, whats the best option for a replacement? MP's Wilwood? Their Adjustable one? Or is there another option? I know i need one for a 67.

Use your floor jack. Take the saddle off. Place rod end down. Use a socket extension into the rod ring. Jack it up and the rod cleanly pops out without any damage.
