Help me build a fast 440!

Find a copy of the book "Old Reliable" by Don Dulmage. It's a dated book, but the information is still very relevant. He shows you how to go FAST on the CHEAP. It's very detailed.

I think there are still copies out there. Wasnt it on DVD or PDF also?

It was but now I cannot find it. The printed copies have all but dried up. I had a member here years back just send me an extra copy he had. It's a good book. A LOT of info in a small space. Very well thought out.

Did you follow this when you built your 400?..

OK, spill the combo!!

First off...... def not a street or street/strip combo.
Nothing at all exotic.
Decent heads(ported RPM), big SFT cam, high CR(13:1), big headers, big carb(4500).

No trick rings, no vacuum pump.

Runs the very bottom of the 10’s at 131+ @3470lbs.

I’ve made more HP from a stock stroke 440 with less CR and less cam, but with bigger & better flowing heads and intake manifold.

Jim Laroy has done some stock stroke 440’s that made way more power than the one I posted the sheet for.

Make like its ice cream and scoop it!!!!

We did not forget that this thread is 3 years old and back on page 2 was reminded the guy hasn't been on the Forum in at least a year correct?...

Well, me not being a big block expert (or an expert in anything :D), I'm paying attention.....

I would try simply replacing your stock iron intake with a holley street dominator or M1 and see what that does. Should get you to pull a bit harder on the top end. You don't want to spin too much faster than 6,000 rpm anyhow with stock oiling. You still have the small pick up tube or is it upgraded to the Hemi style?
. I have to kindly disagree. The performer rpm intake is best for mildly upgraded 440. Its outta breathe at 6000rpm. Eddy heads with 84cc chambers and that intake, with this cam

Here’s one way to do it......

One of that main things to keep in mind if you’re trying to get into the 550+hp out of a stock stroke 440, and still be able retain a reasonable degree of streetability is......... use heads that are suitable for the task at hand.
Heads that will provide a good balance of flow and velocity.

If the heads are “good”, then there is more latitude to adjust/taylor the combo to suit the application...... and still make decent power if the plans call for something that leans towards the milder side.

It had impressive performance in a somewhat more than "mild" 383 (263/267@.050 cam), but of course that's a significantly smaller displacement too.
Part 2 of Hot Rod's Mopar Intake Manifold Shootout

I'll see how it does in my 451 once I get the 950 carb dialed in (and have enough nerve and straight empty road to wind 'er up)
Then it might be time to try an M1 or Victor intake (and possibly a 1050 Dominator)...

I had a pretty rowdy 383 in my dart for a few years. Car went 11.50’s in full street trim. My car ran fastest with eddy rpm intake and trick flow heads. Slowed down .2 with victor intake. I ran 4500 dynamic converter with 4:10’s and 28” radial.

I noticed the year 2017 immediately on page one...

Has the OP tried flipping the air cleaner lid yet? lolololol

MUST NOT HAVE BEEN THE RIGHT COMBINATION ----------------------------nuff said

I've run the original M1 and the new Victor back to back on the dyno, the difference is with in two or three numbers. With the Victor having hp and the M1 having TQ so I would not hesitate using the M1. They were so close it was suprising.

I fit an M1 with a drop air cleaner under a 71 with a 440 -

Sorry, I just now saw this. No, I did not. Not because it's not a fantastic recipe. Because it's too radical a build for what I'm doing. It's a race engine recipe. That's not what I'm building.
