So like everyone, I'm always taking back roads with an eye out for any MOPARS needing to be rescued.
A few years ago I spotted a derelict Duster with weeds growing up through the asphalt driveway around the tires.
I tried knocking and left my number with a nice young woman who said it was her roommate's car. And that she will never sell it.
On my way off the street, I spot 2 ole boys with a 65 impala with the hood up.
Being a car guy I stop and start up a conversation eventually leading to the duster.
Oh that's Dees car. But she'll never sell it, she loves that car. But if you wanna talk to her, she walks her little dog every afternoon.
So I head over to AutoZone and buy a cheapie car cover for the duster and start driving by each afternoon hoping to run into her.
Finally I'm there at the right time.
As I pull up I'm my 66 polara wagon I ask, are you Dee?
Then I ask if she got my number from her roommate?
She said she got it but it wasn't for sale.
No problem. I don't have any money right now, I just love old MOPARS and keeping them running, like this wagon.
So I show her my wagon and as I pop the hood to show her the leak free, detailed big block I tell her I brought her a cover for the old duster and if it was ok with her, I'd like to cover it.
What? You brought a cover for my car?
Yup, I tell her. That way someday when I buy it from you, it won't be anymore deteriorated from the sun. A car as nice as this deserves to be covered.
She looks up at me, and says, I'm gonna wash her first before I put the cover on. It's been a few years since I washed it. Would that be ok?
I tell her of course, its your car.
Fast forward 12 months....
Dee calls me and says if I get the duster running and love it, I can have it. It's time to let her go.
How much? I ask.
Nothing, you can have it free she says. Just drive it.
The moral of the story...never say never, always be a respectful to your elders, be patient and never underestimate the powers of endearment of a cheap car cover.
They are still out there.

Here's how I found it.
It hadn't run in over 5 years.
But since it was a leaning tower of power, it fired up pretty easily.

Be sure to swing by and take Dee for a ride in it, you know, once you get the 408 in it

I took it back with a matte blue paint job, pin down hood and the detailed, tuned up slant 6.
I let her drive it and she said it had never run that good before. Its amazing what a new gas tank, pertonix ignition and rebuilt carburetor will do along with a fresh set of tires on unbent wheels for a car's ride and driving qualities.
