Draining the radiator

Now, can someone tell me how to drain the newer radiators with those stupid plastic petcocks? I have NEVER had one of them work. I always get mad and pull the bottom hose off and dump everything at once.

I've always had to grab them with a set of pliers to get them off, then if you're lucky it might drain.
