Getting rid of the TV altogether.....

-
We haven't watched network fake news channels in 5 or 6 years. All we watch is some Discovery Channel shows, like Alaska, the last frontier, Moonshiners, and Last Alaskans. We watch Graveyard Carz and Iron Resurrection on Motor Trend, and we watch all The Walking Dead shows on AMC. No interest in much else!

Got a big TV and sound system but only watch DVD's and haven't watched regular TV in 40 years and don't miss it...

A question for you streaming guys...how do you get a signal to multiple tv's? IE living room, garage, bedroom?

I only know Roku TVs and boxes and DSL networking.
First you get your wifi network set up by logging into your router and configuring it. You can also hardwire the network with CAT6 cable, way more reliable but a hassle running cabling.
Each TV gets an internet connection (unique IP address) from your internal wifi network.
Then each TV can stream whatever you choose. There are limits imposed on the number of simultaneous devices that can stream that can be overcome with $, and your bandwidth is a limiting factor too.
I hope I understood what you are asking.

Perfectly. Thank you! My only hangup is, I have stoopid tv's. :(

Same here. Started buying good shows about 40 years ago. Have not watched anything new except "Big Bang Theory" in decades.

If the TV has HDMI ports, all you need is a $25 Roku box. If the TV has USB ports, you can use a Roku stick.
If you got antenna input too, you have to switch inputs between the streaming box and the antenna from the TV. And you get no on screen menu for the antenna channels.
a Roku TV (TCL brand and others) allow you to change from streaming to antenna from within the internal Roku box. The real advantage of a Roku TV is it will handle your antenna channels pretty nicely. Roku will build an antenna channels menu for you and go out to the internet through the wifi connection to gather info and scheduling for you to see and choose on screen.

Interesting. 3 of the TV's do have HDMI's. I believe usb's as well. So I would have to buy a Roku box for each tv? Will each tv have to be it's own account? Or will any of them work on one account?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first foray into the streaming only world. Been with Comcast for years and years, but Im tired of getting bent over and not even getting dinner out of it. lol

LOL!
1. yes, or a stick
2. no
3. yes....your email address is your account and a basic account is free. Each TV must be registered and activated separately tho. Roku kind of takes control, pretty annoying. If you don't activate the TV with Roku, you can't connect to the internet and thus cannot stream or get menuing of antenna channels. I'm not pushing Roku, there is plenty of competition out there. But's that's what I know and they are all similar. Except for the handling of the antenna channels. I think ChannelMaster may have something that does that too.

Edit:
Found this today, looks to handle OTA (antenna channels) quite well and you can do streaming by purchasing a Fire Stick (USB) for each TV. It will also stream your OTA to any TV with a Fire stick. There are some pretty bad reviews tho.

this may be the way to go

If you don't do OTA and just want to stream, it's not nearly as complicated. :)

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Yea buddy looks like my collection of movies. I can watch them more than once and enjoy the not having commercials.

It's amazing how decent, intelligent, and entertaining the old shows and movies are. Nothing like the crass, brain dead, stuff being pushed today. I hate commercials also.

FYI if you watch TV and care....
About a week ago, Roku added added hundreds of free streaming channels. So if you have a Roku box or TV and have completed the free registration, they appear appended to your antenna channels menu. There are news, music, movie, weather, classic etc channels. There is even a Forensic Files channel. No live sports that I saw.
I know I sound like a Roku salesman lol. This closes the deal on Dish tho, I'm getting rid of it when the contract expires and I'll stream any sports and other channels I want.

I looked on Comcast's website the other day and for 'my area' they do not offer internet only. I think it's just a ploy to weed out the lazy from actually calling. Going to call them tonight and see.

We haven't had cable in over 20 years. Haven't had satellite in over 10 years. All we've had in that time is an over the air antenna. We watch mainly GRIT-TV, METV, H&I......all of the old movie channels. Plus we have over 2000 DVDs so we can watch whatever we want. I guess I'm old fashioned when it comes to steaming stuff and Netfux and the like. When I pay for something, I want it in my hand. Paying for intangibles makes no sense to me.

That's the beauty of this. The channels appear on the antenna TV lineup and work just like an antenna channel. And gratis.
