well, i´m still pretty proud of it....not long ago i wrote about the "no budget" 5.2 mag i built out of several hurt ones, stock short block and home ported heads, 218/224° HR camshaft and waaaayyy wrong gears in the rear axle (3.55).....we got a 12.8x this last october. It will get an 650 DP next spring...trying to get more out of it. So what i want to say: it´s not too difficult to build a totally streetable 12 sec. 318. So i voted for 11s. for sure it would be interesting what this junk yard engine would do with some more compression, TF 190 heads and 240°@.050", a victor intake, 750 cfm carb, 5000 stall and 4.10s in the rear....

With no budget and the right combo converter trans and gears i think a 12 sec street 318 would be obtainable. Maybe even faster. To me a street car has to be able to drive at highway speeds (65-75) without over heating and all that. So that will rule out tall gears. Oh and pump gas is mandatory for a street car IMHO

A guy on this site runs 11.7's with a 318 in a true street car on street tires and pump gas. That, in my book, definitely qualifies as a killer 318

I did it with a 727, 4.88 & a stock short block ‘78 - 400.
Very streetable, not really Hwy friendly though with a small block, a OD would be the ticket.
4.88 X .69 = 3.36. Now couple that with a tire diameter you need..... 28? 29? Inches...

The best we can get here is 91. So thats considered top pump gas around here. We do have a vp store but no pumps.

That wasn't a 318, it was a X block, with the 318 casting number, and w2 or similar heads, I remember the car well. Grudge racing is all about BSing the competition. I remember him having the engine up for sale some time later...

How is the motor a "non factor" when it was a 400 plus cube stroker with w series heads and if my memory serves me correctly, a 250 or 300 shot of nitrous? That's a long way from a "real" 318

Dang skippy. Here's how I look at it. I don't cut a 318 any slack for bein a 318. In other words, if it's a killer engine, it's a killer engine. Reason for my thinking is because yeah, it's a 318, but it can make power just like any other engine. Might be a LITTLE harder to get to the same place, but it certainly can be done. Just because it's a teen doesn't make it bad. Underdog, maybe......but as far as I'm concerned, that helps the sleeper image. Plenty of people have had their ASSES handed to them by "just" a 318.

In my opinion 318 Street car that's running in the mid 12s is definitely killer! You could continue to build it all the way up with a solid roller killer heads and tap into the mid 8000 RPM range but how many times? I think a huge part of a street motor is its durability,, riding the razor's edge of a maximum output of a stock block not really my thing. And definitely not a good recipe for the street. My two cents
And on the whole car approach, let’s not overlook the “Light Makes Might” school of thought. I’m pretty sure a stock bottom end ‘69 318 with a cam, intake, four barrel, headers, and moderately decent heads could probably run sub ten second times in something like a serious street strip Morris Minor, Opel GT, Dodge Colt, etc. Might be more of a young man’s ride for long distances but more than one way around that fence.

in the racers forum, in 10 second thread theres no stock stroke n/a 318s, in 11 second thread theres 2 stock stroke n/a combo's listed
in the 12 second thread theres bout 3! in the 13 second thread theres 2! of coarse streetabilitys in the eye of the beer holder as always! surprised me but wont but a hand full of stroked 318s in all of these threads!
