I've been sanding away for the past 4 days. I know, I'm not a "perfect sander" but is the anodizing not off the grill and the bezels in these areas? I have done most of the sanding by hand, but these areas are still different colors and areas look much more shiny than others.

Anodizing is usually chemically stripped.

Yea with Easy Off Heavy Duty... I couldn't find any at the stores the other day though.

Took a break and went back at it tonight...looks much better now...

Super fine wet/dry sandpaper 800 grit range and water.
Will have to go even finer to really get a shine, 1200 grit.
But it is looking like you are making progress.

Yea im going to get some for my orbital sander lol. My hands hurt.

The "silver" (horizontal) part was painted. Maybe paint stripper would be easier than sanding?

I didnt want to put to many chemicals on it. I ended up using some brake cleaner to wipe it while I was sanding it last night.

I also didn't know that part was painted, I know in the later darts it was but I couldn't find anything saying that about the 67-9 cars. It looked aluminum/chrome/anodized like the other areas.

The 100 grit paper really did work on it late last night.

I just looked at Walmart and owes by my school and both places were cleaned out of cleaning supplies... pun intended... if people would stop making a run on cleaning supplies and toilet paper that would be great...

Looks great! Its not perfect but, I'm not perfect so it should fit right in. Shoot the amount I've spent on sand paper and other little things I could have paid and had this thing shipped off to be professionally done lol.

Today I did some light sanding with 800, 1000 and 1500 grit...I'm over sanding... then I did some polishing by hand... Im liking it... FYI touching this now instantly gets it dirty lol... its going to suck to tape to paint it...

Any ideas for keeping it a little more clean? Wax? Clear coat?

Wax or clear will both work. But non UV stabilized clear will turn yellow within a year. You'll hate it. 2k clear is the way to go, but requires a respirator to spray it.

Wax is temporary at best.

Aluminum oxidizes readily in almost any atmosphere (humidity, temperature doesn't affect it much unlike steel). That oxidation will make it look whiter and more dull. Polishing aluminum sucks, so I'd recommend painting the exposed areas silver. Silver can cover over black pretty easily, and masking on silver paint can leave marks and fingerprints. So I'd paint it black all over and then mask and spray the silver.

I do prefer the look of aluminum though. But I would try to have it reanodized for corrosion protection. The anodize is harder than paint (it's aluminum oxide) but won't be quite as shiny as raw polished aluminum. It will be shinier than oxidized polished aluminum though.

Just my $.02

All the sanding... and polishing to just paint it... :BangHead: lol touche'

if your gonna keep it polished AL, wax it. It will sort of seal the metal from oxygen and slow the process. I did my 65 bezels and they still shine with a few rubs. My anodizing was hard to get off too, the EZ-off got about 70% of it off easily but there were spots just like you saw that really were tough. 600 Sandpaper was just making it smooth.....I used 200 and it came off in no time but took 4 finer grits to get the scratches out of the soft AL.

Pretty much exactly what I was doing. I may try waxing them after painting it all.

The problem you'll have later, is that almost anything you use to polish/clean the bare aluminum is going to screw up any paint it touches. Once your done polishing and painting, you might try a good protectant "wax" such as Turtle Wax Ice, which will not harm semi-matte black paint. Actually, it makes it look better. And I think it'll also protect the bare aluminum, at least temporarily.

As for clear... I looked at some spray can 2k clear coats, but reading the reviews. 1. you need a respirator. 2 many people said they turned the metal more of a matte/flat clear.

Someone recommended to me Sharkhide aluminum clear coat made by Eastwood. Reading reviews and looking online it seems to work very well and be the go to for the boating/marine community

I may spray some primer later.
