Call me crazy, but I am strongly considering swapping my ‘68 dart’s 833 to a 727. It has a 340 (416 stroker), about 515 HP. Los Angeles traffic, plus my wife not being as confident driving the 4 speed, and I want her to be more comfortable driving it.

I’m trying to come up with a parts list, I have searched around and found some info, but most everyone is doing the opposite swap. This is why I have so far:

727 trans/converter/cooler, looking at a kit such as 111138P1 from Summit or JEGS but I am also considering buying these parts separately. TCI Auto 111138P1 TCI Street Rodder Transmission Packages | Summit Racing
Neutral safety switch
Floor shifter
Kickdown linkage (Lokar probably)
Driveshaft - 833 is shorter so I’ll need to modify or get a new driveshaft, right?

What am I missing?

Thank you in advance!

Whatever you do please don't put your money in TCI! Use Cope transmission or other reputable mopar trans companies. Others will chime in and tell you the same.

First, have you considered advertising in FABO to see if there was anybody looking to do an Auto to manual swap that you could do a trade with? You will have to decide if money would have to change hands in addition to the swap. I cannot speak on the TCI issue. I did an Automatic to 4 speed conversion, so I can tell you what I did in reverse. I hope this is a complete list. I am going from memory. You will need:
1. Transmission, torque converter and flexplate.
2. Might not need rear transmission cross brace mount. The one for the 4 speed and automatic were the same in my 69 Barracuda.
3. Transmission cooler or radiator with built in tranny cooler.
4. Tranny cooler lines.
5. Shift linkage.
6. Kickdown linkage.
7. Starter relay for an automatic (for the neutral safety switch circuit).
8. different drive shaft.
9. Tranny dipstick and tube.
10. Pedal assembly. Technically you could make what you have work, but you should be able to sell your pedal assembly for more than enough to get an Auto pedal assembly.
11. Rubber plug to plug the clutch rod hole in the firewall.
12. Different dust cover.

If you can cut up your 4 speed Dart and put in an auto trans , the cars means nothing to you ... Sell it and by a grocery getter . Your wife and all mopar freeks will rest much easier ..

If you do it keep me in mind for the pedals and transmission I might go the other way.

Thanks for all the replies! I should have mentioned, this car was originally a slant 6/automatic, so I’m not cutting up a 4 speed car. If anything, I’m restoring it to it’s more “correct” state! Plus, we already have a grocery getter, the point here is that we like driving our dart...

I have considered swapping parts with someone, but part of me wants new parts for peace of mind. I’ll most likely end up selling my 4 speed parts here on fabo, but maybe if I can find someone local to swap with.

Also, yep, TCI looks like it is not the way to go...

Just trying to save you headaches in the long run. TCI doesn't have such a good reputation for mopar stuff. They advertise everywhere but don't let that suck you in.

Oh thank god .. I for one will sleep better tonight ... Enjoy your ride

Seriously? I hope you are kidding. That was a rather rude thing to say. He wants to share the enjoyment of driving his car with his wife. I commend him for that. Plus, what will he have to cut? He can leave the 4 speed hump in it. I can't think of anything that will need to be cut.

It did kinda sound rude .. Didn't mean it to ..I apologize for that .. I meant no harm .. Just don't know many people who would change a 4 speed to an auto .

No offense taken, I realize it is not for everyone, but not everyone lets their wife drive their car either! Plus it's just not as fun dealing with traffic in the 4 speed...

#13. New wife...

New transmission is cheaper :)

I have a super clean, 22k OG miles 727 from a class C motorhome my uncle gave me.
The 360 is going into my 1965 valiant convertible but I want a manual 4 speed.
I will guarantee the trans.
Wanna swap?

Hi I'm in the process of switching from auto to 4 speed and have a 727 that came out of my 68 barracuda (originally a /6) and I'm in the LA area. Let me know if you're interested in coming to check out the parts. I also have an original automatic center console available. PM me you that works better for ya
