I found that information in a post in this forum while trying to research torque converters and their capabilities.

I found a wikipedia on the A727 which showed that the (36RH/37RH-also known as) was a very robust trans for handling torque. It did not say how much hp the factory tq was capable of.

Is there a chart somewhere that would show what torque converter you would need for a certain hp?

I also came across an internet file regarding the 727 trans and what might be its capabilities as regards to hp. In this one it says, among other things, that it can handle up to 450hp (2nd paragraph) https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/chrysler-a-727-transmission While I’m not looking for anywhere near that much, I was thinking along the lines of 350-375. It will never be raced and I would see no more than 4000-4500 rpm on those instances I put my foot in it. I am just wanting to spin the tires on occasion. Lol

Btw, I have a 1969 dart gts with a 340 auto that came out of a 70 barracuda, 3.55 gear.
 
Why a 727 trans? A 904 is smaller and can be just as strong. And a whole lot cheaper. This is coming from a guy who put a 904 behind a 408 Six Pack motor.

Its what came with the car..I’m just trying to find out what it can handle hp wise just the way it sits.

Get a 2500 and call it a day.

Or finish your engine build and call a converter company to make you one that matches your engine. Or do like me and take a stock converter and have it rebuilt to a higher stall to make do for a while.

I believe any of the stock converters can "handle" 400 hp, its how effectively and efficiently they handle and transfer it to the ground.
 
The weak spot in the small block trans is usually the direct clutch pack. They usually only have three frictions; whereas the bb usually has four; hemi five. Most of the big bad 518s I've taken apart only had three as well. Any 727 converter will be strong enough.

Thanks for all your responses, it helped me out. With the prices coming down on some of these parts to replace stock ones, maybe I can get another 80hp or so. I figure that will get the results I want.
