Cheap Bass to learn on, something like $60 shipped to So. Cal. Someone got a dusty one in the basement that hasn't been used in 20 years? Every one I bid on gets sniped at the last minute. Show me what you got. Will restring...Thanks in advance.

Hit the pawn shops. You can find Fender Squier bass guitars cheap. Plus they aren't bad guitars either. Hell a new one is only a couple hundred bucks.

Squier J bass at a pawn shop here for $100.

I'm tempted.

See if there's a "Musicgoround" store near you or other used gear store.

I got some great deals at ours before it closed.

Guitar center is a bit more pricey on their used stuff but sometimes they have stuff in the $100 range.

Any lower than $75 and it's probably crap or you got super lucky.

I think you guys missed the $60 part! Haahaaa. I found a bunch on Ebay new for 99 shipped. Maybe good enough to find out he doesnt like it. Then I'd have to pick it up....

$100 new, shipped. Ill give it a shot. Ibanez GSR200 clone.

As with anything, buy a quality piece. Not only do they hold their value should you decide you don’t like playing bass, but a cheap instrument is also not going to play like a good quality piece. You don’t want to struggle with fighting a crappy instrument while you’re learning. I bought this MusicMan Stingray for $800, easily a $1500 guitar. It’s an American made piece, and practically plays itself. Use your car senses here, better quality is better quality.

I was gonna say, that looks like an Ibanez SoundGear copy.

I have two of those real SDGR's and I love them.

I played a $600 one at Guitar Center and really liked it.

Found it online for $275 and free shipping.

Decided the active pickups were too much of a PITA (the 9v battery always dies right before you play in front of anyone).

Found a standard pickup version at a pawn shop for $75.

The only issue is that the mail ordered one has a bit of fret buzz that neither personally auditioned one has/had.

I've done just a bit of adjustment but so far it's not quite gone.

That's the risk you take with mail order.

Hard to find anything under $100 when shipping is involved.

Heavy, long, VERY awkward, and fragile.

That's a $50 bass with $50 shipping.

...and someone's (likely several someones) still making money!

Gotta tell you many of these low $$$ import guitars are really good values.

Okay so you dont get Duncan or Lindy Fraylin pickups, swamp ash bodies or high dollar bridges. But for the price they are good.

I had to swallow hard last Christmas as I pulled the trigger on an $89.00 acoustic guitar for my grand daughters boyfriend. Except for cheap paint job the thing plays well and even sounds good.

My late neighbor Dickie always played Epiphones then one day he shows up with some FuManChu Les Paul that had a nice neck, a killer setup and he paid $119.00 delivered. Pulls it out of the case, plugged into my '64 Bandmaster and plays Gimme Three Steps like Gary Rossington was in the room.

I used to be a real guitar snob... Custom Shop Mary Kay Strat witj gold hardware, owned six or seven Memphis built St. Blues Bluesmaster's and a sweet '73 Tele with a one piece ash body.

But no more. My Indonesian Squire Strat and my LP Jr. are all I have left And a woeful Mustang modeling amp.

But I can't knock some of those new imports. And some of the 70's Japanese stuff was really good. I have a 70's Jap Club Date drum kit that is pretty cool, too.

At least with a cheap guitar it doesn't have to go to the machine shop to be fixed before you use it.

This brand has gotten very good reviews, like "how can this be this good?" type reviews...I wouldnt know a 'First Act' from a 'Taylor' (my kids acoustic on permanent loan from his music teacher) but Ill get it over to him to make any adjustments. He's a published guitarist and his band was on "America's got talent" and couldn't advance because they tape on Sundays and his commitment to our Church as praise band director was more than the show. IIRC they even said that on the show. Great guy. This style is $200 retail as a real Ibanez so its not a stretch to imagine the same factory could not pump out clones for 1/2 price as white label guitars.

Why buy a clone when you can buy the real thing? Clone was a bust, out of stock so I went to plan B: Chasing a used Yamaha RBX170 as far as going to the bank to drive 25 miles to pick up when a client of mine texted me that he had an Ibanez GSR200 that he just rebuilt (new pickups, pots, new strings, truss worked) ready to go and it was only 10 miles away so I told Yamaha man I found something closer, and maybe better for the young man, with its smaller neck and a lighter body. It was offered to me earlier for $50 as a basket case and I declined as I don't know squat about guitars. It has a few scratches on the back but I'm going to work on its finish when I can. Maybe wet sanding and a new coat of clear on it and a polish to give it a shine again.
