1966 Barracuda value?

Hello! I’m new to the forum and mopar scene. I found a clean, numbers matching 66’. It’s a 273 2bbl originally but has cam and 4bbl intake and carb. It will come with the original parts. The body is straight and has a newer matte black paint job. The rest is original. PS, PB and drum brakes all around. I’ve looked on Hagerty and Mecum and prices are kinda all over the place. He’s asking $14,000. What are your thoughts on the asking price? Thanks.

10 to 14k is about right for a solid no rust good paint good engine tires trans etc.

Check with you insurance company for value
 
It has been my experience that a matte black paint job on a car like this is hiding something. Matte black on a rat rod, old truck or a rough old car is one thing, but matte black on an otherwise decent car would scare me. It is fairly easy to slather Bondo thickly on a rough body and do some fairly sloppy body work, if you cover it up with high build primer and matte black paint. WAY more body work and block sanding are required for a nice, shiny paint job. $14K is not a terrible price for one with a decent paint job, but that matte black scares me. Are you familiar with the filler and paint thickness tools? The look kind of like a small tire pressure gauge, and they use magnetism to measure how thick filler, primer and paint are. If you seriously look at the car, use one of them. If it checks out OK, and you like the matte black, go for it.

The owner had mentioned the original green paint had seen better days so he stripped it down and then had it painted matte black because he liked the look but also knew it was more cost effective not to have to do a lot of body work. With that said it looks very straight and solid but I guess the only way to really tell is to test it.
 
The matte black to me would be like the car was in primer. It will need paint so spend accordingly. I'd say he's about double what I would be willing to spend. Plus, it's missing some options that I would consider almost a must, like the console. But, if it's what you want it's worth what you are willing to spend.
 
But, then again, if its what you want, make him an offer. They don't come up too often. I searched over a year for my silver 66.
 
Dont get to caught up. Take another set of trusting eyes with you. Look at the front cowl and under the dash board, under neath. Ve seen some cars that look good on the outside but hold surprises. My.02

The cost of a real paint job should be subtracted from the price. Then, if the car is solid and mechanically sound you'll have the price. IMO that's a 7-8k car. 65'
 
$14k seems high. There is almost no market for them. Not that I don’t like them, just a fact. Would likely be hard to get your money back. I think that is a nice shiny paint, near perfect price. A first gen cuda that is not a formula s is not that rare.

Think about where you want to end up with it. $5k worth or repairs / upgrades goes in a flash.

Maybe someone will correct me on this, but I don’t think there is numbers matching back that far. I don’t think there are vin numbers on the motor or trans.
 
$10,000 is reasonable for a decent Commando car but more for a fully restored car done right. This one is not a true Commando with a matte black paint job so I would say in the 5-$7500 range.
 
that has been on offer up for quite a while, advertised by 2 different people anything from numbers matching to having a 360
they had it up for 10K a few months ago make sure you give it a good look
 
I think you made a the right choice on passing. It looked like a solid 8K car, for 14k on an early barracuda for me would need a nearly brand new nice paint job.
 
As mentioned, no matching numbers that year, if you're talking about the VIN being on any of the drivetrain. You can look at casting numbers and date codes though. What does the VIN decode as? How about a photo of the fender tag to see what options it may have come with originally. Does it have a Certicard? Build sheet? The price seems a bit on the high side to me too considering it's not a Formula S or even a Commando car. I'm not big on a column shift either. Just a 7 1/4 rear? If so, that would need to be upgraded eventually too.
