Hello, I recently picked up this 8 3/4 for a 66 Plymouth valiant convertible with the belief that it was for an A body. But these jam nut axles are throwing me of

i measured the spring perches and they are at 44" on center and the backing plate to backing plate are 57 1/8. and drum to drum it is 60".

any help besides the normal reference to what google says would be awesome.

I was thinking i can just change out the drums and axles for A body ones which i just found on offer up and move each perch in .5 to match the 43". Is this thought correct ?

Thanks, Btw

About 57-64 not truck. Tapered axle see the nut. Measure spring pad distance and note under axle.

thats what i was thinking, is it possible to just switch out the axles and drums ?

and any suggestions of what i can do to put this in my 66 valiant

64 or earlier, likely a b-body. The nut holds the axle and drum together,(that is what is known as a tapered axle, it doesnt have a normal flange) and can be a real ***** to take apart, especially without the proper puller.
There is lots of info on "for b-bodies only" for disassembly and conversion. Do a search. General driveline, and also 62-65 threads.

That’s how they were made 64 and down. You don’t want that diff move on. Replacement drums are almost non existent. You need a dog bone puller and a sledgehammer to get the drums off.

I found some A body axles and drum. Isnt it possible to just swap the backingplates, axles and drums ?

No. 44" center on the spring pads means its a b/c body, the a bodys axles will be too short, the backing plates are different, so are the brakes.
You will need matching parts fron a later b-body rear, need to move the spring pads, and a set of custom axles.... or get the housing narrowed to use a-body axles, brakes and backing plates.
Then your next problem will be bolt pattern. That housing, being a b-body has 5 on 4 1/2, your early a-body is 5 on 4"
You will have to decide which pattern you want, and then find custom wheels for the b-body width rear, which is wider than an a, moving the wheels closer to the fender.
Then again, you can always find a proper a-body 8 3/4. They run somewhere from $500-$1500, depending on how complete, and what equipment.

i only paid $150 for it, and the valiant only has a 273 commando so im thinking of finding a abody housing and using this pumpkin
