My shifter shaft seal is leaking. What all is involved to change it out? I have the pan off to do some other things. Do I need to pull the valve body?
Many thanks.

It can be done without pulling the valve body down sometimes, but since you already have the pan off I would just drop it down. That will make the job much easier.

There is a special tool that allows you to replace the seal in the vehicle. Once you have done it a couple times its a 10 minute job.
You will need the pan off to replace the inner seal (o-ring). it requires you remove the c clip and the throttle pressure lever will have to be pushed back up when you reinstall.
Most of the time the inner seal is ok, its the main seal that causes all the trouble. I consider this seal a normal maintenance item. If its not leaking its just a matter of time.

If the manual shaft is grooved where the seal rides, you can get what's called a "heavy duty manual shaft seal"...it's a taller seal that rides on a fresh surface.

Yes it's like a miniature front seal; the kind without an outer flange. Pry it out from the top with a screwdriver and pull it in from the bottom with a slide hammer. I always use sealer on these.

I got mine for a buck at the transmission shop on the corner. He just went over to his big drawer and picked one out of a bin. Pull the VB, its much easier to pull it in with a washer and a jackscrew setup or whatever procedure you choose. My shaft had not even a mark where the seal rode. Never had to mess with the inner seal. Good luck.

Here’s the tool and seal you’ll need to replace the outer seal.

Thanks for your help guys. Ordered up the tool and a few seals from NAPA. Have probably 3 other transmissions also needing the seal.

Thats the tool I have, it works great. I did one recently in the car and it went smooth. Had the car on a lift so that helps too.

Man I can't find that puller anywhere. The one from NAPA is for GM and is smaller than for Chrysler. I can't find any brand anywhere for Chrysler.

The seal will pop out with a screwdriver from the top pretty easy. If there's no room from the top, then it can be poked out from the bottom. Just use a slide hammer and washer to pull the new one in from the bottom.

My friend found a tool on Ebay. Of course the Mopar one is 67.00 while the GM ones are 10.00

I should’ve clarified what I was doing with the tool I bought. I’ve been loaning it out and holding a deposit for the price of the tool and then refunding that amount when I get it returned. So that way you don’t have the one time expense except for the shipping costs.

Dont forget there is an o-ring on the kickdown lever shaft as well .
I need to do my Motorhome as well and have just decided to drop the pan and VB. I can adjust the bands while I am in there.
