any body make a replacment axel w/ the big bolt pattern for a 7-1/4 rear end??

Just ask around for someone to give you some for free. There are many people giving away perfectly good 7 1/4 rear ends on this site as well as www.slantsix.org. I'm sure you'll find at least one with large bolt pattern.

jomoper is giving away a FREE 7 1/4. Search for "Free stuff" It is a thread that a bunch of us have been giving away free stuff. It is on like the 4th or 5th page. Good luck.

Was there ever a BBP 7 1/4? You may have to redrill for BBP but I am not sure if those ends have enough meat/surface area to do so. Perhaps a fill and then redrill.

I have a 74 Duster ready to die that is a disc brake, 7 1/4 BBP rear.

There are BBP 7.25 running around.

If you are looking for a pair of stock axles, I'll sell the ones I have for $40 + shipping.

There are LBP and SBP 7 1/4 rears, but they each have there own axels, and housings. You cannot swap a LBP axle into a SBP housing.

It is possible to redrill the flange on a SBP axle, for LBP. I have a 5.13 SG 7 1/4 rear (bet you guys didn't know there was such a animal from Mopar) with redrilled flanges.

Yeah, there were a few factory LBP 7-1/4's. I think most commonly found on 73 and later A body's with factory disk brakes and slant six or 318 engine car. Axles do not interchange as I think was already said. I think the LBP one's had c-clip axles too. I think they had larger brakes too.

Almost went that route myself when upagrading to front disks with LBP on my 73 Drum brake car. There are still 8-1/4's to be found though, I would pass on the effort to swap in another 7-1/4.

I'm going to check you on that statement. :D

Reason I'm even questioning it, is that I believe I vaguely recall pulling axles and finding that the bearing set-up is different between large and small pattern.
I wasn't pulling the axles to use, I was pulling them to remove 7-1/4 housings for cores for a specific non-mopar related application and noticed the difference, but I'm not 100% sure.

It won't surprise me, if true.

Mark.

i could probably weld them up and drill the new pattern.
Also, depending on the offset of your wheels, adaptors are also a viable option.

Yup I have a 75 valiant with a BBP 7 1/4 with the 9 bolt rear cover. I also have a hybrid 7 1/4 with C clip axles and a 10 bolt cover that is BBP.

Yeah they made a bunch of um.

It is not necessary to weld the flange. I have redrilled both 7 1/4 and 8 3/4 axles and brake drums to big bolt pattern.

No I really don’t. I think it’s a 80’s Mirada, Aspen. Or Fifth ave.
Thanks, that explains why I have never seen a "C" clip 7 1/4. Never tore down a 7 1/4 that new. Only '60's and '70's. Though I have a couple rears from F,M,J bodies, here. Never even looked close enough to see if 7 1/4 or 8 1/4

Once you know the difference they are easy to tell apart. 8 1/4 rear cover is completely oval. The C clip 7 1/4 has 10 bolts but both ends are straight.

Here is a picture of the rear cover.

This was when me and friend were trying to figure out what the hell it was. I took it out of a 72 Duster. But it had a spool K member with disc. I don’t know if it was originally in a A body or not.

Just took a look at what I had. Found a 8 1/4 out of a 89 dip cop car (non SG).
also a 8 1/4 non SG in my wifes' 88 Dippy
Several early type 7 1/4's both small and large BP
One late style 7 1/4 (assuming "C" clip).
What I did notice, on the late 7 1/4 the axle tubes are the large diameter, and "neck" down in size, where entering the center section. This is different then the early BBP 7 1/4, that has the small tube, that gets larger at the outer end of the tube. Also the late 7 1/4 has only four brake backing plate mounting bolts, where the early BBP 7 1/4 has five.
Learning a lot, here.
