I have a diff housing and k- member that someone prior to me decided to powder coat. Beside the fact they used greyish silver, (UGLY), they also did a terrible job on prep. The diff mounts still have dirt and rust encapsulated within the powder coat. What is the best method to take it all back to steel? Blasting? Chemical? @CudaChick1968?

Thanks for the shout George!

If the prep was that substandard, blasting -- or even a wire wheel -- should work. Blasting a k-member in a cabinet is a pain trying to reach in all the crevices.

Chemical stripper would be faster for sure but 5 gallons is $200, plus you have the chore of finding a suitable strip tank large enough to hold a k-member or rear end housing. A big barrel would work but you'd need to win the lottery to fill it up enough to reach halfway across the pumpkin.

If one of your local powder shops uses a burn-off oven they might run them through for you for a nominal charge.

Once you get it down to bare steel you can deburr the k-member and inspect / fix all the welds. They're pretty ugly.

Straight up, since the last job was done over debris, gunk and rust (or corrosion is popping through the powder), I'd be surprised if the parts were even blasted first either. It might come off just with compressed air ... or staring at it hard.

I hate reading stories like yours. Lame efforts from rookies give my entire industry a black eye. It's akin to hiring a street magician to fill out your corporate tax return.

Let me know how it works out. Thanks for thinking of me! :thankyou:

Thank you all.
I'll get a pic of the mounts......unbelievable!
I never thought about the poor prep also crating poor bonding. I will look into that. Ya 45 gallons of stripper could come out a little pricey!
The burn off sounds interesting.

I'm gonna go see if it will scrape off in a non conspicuous area.
