Guys, I snagged an adapter from a C-body that allows the installation of both a rear defogger and a second rear speaker. I was hoping to retrofit it into my A-body, but after fiddling with it tonight, I don't think it's gonna work. It will only bolt in one way, which won't clear the torsion bars for the deck lid.

Maybe they're not all the same? The one I have was pulled from a '73 Newport and has the number 2936346 cast into the adapter housing.

If you have one of these adapters in your A-body, let's see it. If possible, please post the number cast into it. I'd like to find a correct one as this one appears to be useless to me.

i have one but not a pic a this moment. but i have all the partnumbers from my Chrysler passenger car parts catalog. i hope it will help you

Sounds like you need a spacer of a sort to move it downwards and away from the trunk lids bar. Mess with it, you might make it work yet!

Oh my good golly, my 69 dart came stock with a rear defrost and dual rear speakers with an AM/FM radio. When I first saw this contraption I couldn't believe it was factory. hopefully I can post the pics

So the factory did make a bracket that housed both speaker and rear defroster?? Does it still use the same size speaker?

Strange thing that the cars equipped with 2 rear speakers and a defroster had a second box for the speaker that really didn`t need it.?

Those look fabbed by someone other than the factory. 7075 QQ-A-250 Alclad is an aircraft quality aluminum high strength alloy and would be very expensive and that kind of strength would not be needed in a speaker application. That material is usually used in aircraft wings and structures. 7075 is also not to be used in welded applications so I don't think the factory would have used 7075 because the engineers would have known that it isn't supposed to be welded. I worked at Boeing for a couple years and scraps of that stuff was everywere. A past owner must have worked around that stuff and used some scraps to make those.

It is a great idea, I was wanting to put dual speakers in my wifes Swinger that has a rear defogger and couldn't figure how to do it. Looks like I need to make some boxes.

I realize anything is possible from the factory but I don't think it is probable.

A little background: I've owned the car since 1986. Bought from a friend who bought it from another friend. The original speakers were toast, so I replaced them in the early 90's, along with the spliced in brown speaker wire. The other two guys never messed with them, as I was with my friend when he bought the car in 1979 and looked it all over, wondering why a Dart Swinger would have A/C and a bunch of other add-ons( MY brother had a swinger that had very few options, but ran really well on Sunoco premium). The car is factory stock with the AM/FM and the Rear Defrost.

So, it is possible that from 1969 to 1979 that someone could have fabbed them up, but I don't have any idea. Just think it is a cool setup, nonetheless.

The longer I`m in this hobby the less surprised I am from what I find. Whether it`s from Chrysler, the dealers, or previous car owners there`s always something new.

Here's a couple of shots I got from an other member. They also made them in 73 and later with the "grid" type rear window defrosters.

Sorry to bring back this old thread but I wanted to say thanks. I have a 73 Chrysler Newport that someone removed the rear defrost and put in a speaker. I found the blower housing still connected but just laying in the trunk. I still wanted to have the speaker and also connect back up this blower as well. I searched all over and found this forum and this post. I found an original mounting kit that allows for both on eBay but they are $500 and up. So I looked through these pictures and seen the one made from metal that someone made. I took that idea and applied it to 3D printing and made my own for cheap. I have it printing now and will post a follow up once I have it completed and installed. Here is what it will look like though. I am printing this in PETG to with stand cold and hot temps. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks again.
