the great mask debate

I hear "mask work" then I here "mask don't work". Both are true. For me it all comes down to numbers. As an example lets say wearing a n95 mask properly fitted, properly handled is 95% effective. "mask work". But hold on there is still that 5% (mask don't work) so technically it's true but not really reflective of the big picture.
So let's say a mask that is not n95 rated and the percentage slips to 80%. Not fitted properly 70% etc. The message I get from this isn't "don't wear mask because they don't work" but instead wear the best mask you can practically get and follow the guidelines on how to properly use it to the best of your abilities. This same argument can be made for hand washing, something most on here are willing to do. Example: hand washing with soap, hot water and for a period of time equal to singing the happy birthday song. = 95% effective. No soap = 80%. Cold water = 70% etc. I don't see the message from this as " Washing hands doesn't work". I see " Wash your hands following the guidelines as closely as you can". Same argument for social distancing, avoid large gatherings, avoid being indoor with other people etc.
The power in these guidelines is combining the practices to the best of your abilities. Of course the argument could be made that even following all the guidelines to the best of your abilities could still result in getting covid therefore " the guidelines don't work why bother".
The guidelines don't have to be 100% effective to slow the spread of covid and just because the numbers are still going up doesn't mean the guidelines aren't helping. The spread could be worse.
We all probably have room for improvement on following these guidelines myself included. If all that your personal beliefs will allow you to do is wash your hands and social distance then do that to the best of your abilities and thank you. And for those who are doing more than they are comfortable with a special thank you. Its easier to do something you believe in. So I appreciate the extra effort.
PS
Yes, I still feel like a dork wearing a mask but it's getting easier.
