Does anyone know where one can buy the old canvas-like welding blankets like the ones harbor freight used to sell 20+ years ago? It seems like all of the cheaper ones sold today are fiberglass. I'm sick of being itchy everytime I touch that thing, but am having a hell of a time finding the old canvas type.

Those old ones were probably asbestos. LOL

Yeah I hate those fiberglass ones too. My dad has some of the old style, with lots of burn holes in them, I don't think they were as good.

Yeah they weren't worried about asbestos in the old days. Did you ever frost your tree in the 60's ?

We didn't but I know others that did. My dad said that was too expensive. We use to save the tinsel that we hung on the tree every year. Had to take it off the tree and repackage it every year! Lol Hey, maybe our dad saved our lives. Hmm...

When I was in Elementary school (in the 50s) we had a Xmas tree in our classroom. We decorated it with this stuff that they used to use for icicles. I was very young and stupid and thought that stuff was very cool looking so I stole some by sticking as much of it as I could in my pants pocket. I live way down South (S. Texas). By the time I got off of school it was 4 pm and about 85 degrees. I sweated all the way home. Unbeknownst to me the icicle material was made of fiberglass!! The inside of my thigh, not to mention my private parts, were burning like hell by the time I got home. It itched like hell fire and the more I scratched the more it hurt!! I couldn't ask my Mom about it because I'd have to tell her about the thievery. I suffered for many, many, many days until the itching finally stopped, all the young girls at school must of thought that I was a pervert for all the itching in that sensitive area:mad::mob::realcrazy::soapbox::BangHead:?? I used to be young and stupid..............now I'm old and stupid!! LOL:rofl:

There is a fire retardant spray that can be had from Home Depot, get a wool blanket & spray both sides a lot. I have 2 that I've had for years, I think I used 3 bottles each on both blankets. The one time I should have used one, I didn't have it. My Kirkey racing seat cover ended up with a 4" hole in it before I realized a stray had hit it. LOL

Silica cloth? That sounds like a different term for the same ol' fiberglass.

Have you used a carbonized finer blanket? Do they cause the same itchiness?
I think they all use some form of woven cloth, whether its made up of fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber
or anything else you can think of. They use those materials because of the resistance to heat and fire.
Silica is nothing more than sand ground up into a fine powder.
No, i haven’t used a carbon fiber blanket as I’m a lousy welder. But I have worked with carbon fiber. What I do know about carbon fiber is that it hurts like a ***** if you get a strand in your skin.

I think that your choices are limited.
Demonracer made a very good suggestion that works.

My welding blankets are woven tan colored material. I doubt they are fiberglass. Quite heavy too. Never used them until about 5 years ago.

Last ones I bought were from HF. They were some type of woven material, some type of cloth or burlap or hemp soaked in something that made them damp (slightly wet). They didn't make me itch and they lasted a long time (years) until they eventually started to dry out and catch on fire (smolder). They were cheap, lasted a long time and were not fiberglass!!:steering::steering::steering::steering:

What color were they? They sound like the one I had for years and can't seem to find anymore. Any idea where to find those ones?

Dark green...as far as I know HF still sells them?? I can do a google search if u can't?

I'm pretty sure that the HF blanket was a canvas Duck material. Canvas is normally a little damp which helps make it waterproof and because it is so tightly woven it doesn't catch on fire very easy. Unless you weld all day every day, a nice chunk of heavy canvas duck should work??? Any canopy or canvas place would have what you need.
