340 exhaust manifold

-
It's not what fits the engine, it's what fits the BODY. And there are certain heads that have smog fittings etc, but those can be plugged and modified to fit. "I believe" you would not want 340 manifolds on small port 273 heads, either.

Ok I had no idea. I’ve seen long lists of what exhaust manifolds fit on 340’s and they categorize based on years but I thought they meant engine. I guess it’s body

Both. You can fit the wrong manifolds in the right chassis.

Yep, he would need to make 1/8th " plate to bolt to the head that would seal the bottom of the port to the manifold or it would leak BAD.

I have a passenger side 71 340 exhaust manifold on my 66 273 head and it does not leak. I also have 73 340 exhaust manifolds on my son's 73 Dart 318, but that has plugged smog bosses, that does not leak. Headers are another story, but I always run manifolds, so no big deal for me.

The difference from the fancy and expensive 68-70 and the others isn't worth the money IMO. There is basically no difference on a 350hp build.

That list is very wrong.

There is a list I corrected on the site somewhere. It includes body type. Here you go...

Exhaust Manifold Casting #'s - CORRECTED 340 #'s

I've run the good 68-70 340 manifolds on the 318 in one of my 1970 Darts for 30 years with no leak problems...

To me it is more a matter of what car you have and if you want to just buy an exhaust system. The 340 exhaust was pretty good and there are companies that make a good fitting system off the shelf.

The 68 - 70 stock 340 manifolds are the best for flow...

2863549 and 2863553 are factory #'s.

These are the ones I have on my 71 Dart that were on the car when I bought it. I've always done longtube headers on my cars but with this car and my mild of an engine it seems the juice is not worth the squeeze for me.

Just so we’re clear, you’re saying the stock exhaust manifolds are what you chose bc they’re less expensive and just as good?

I bought the car with the exhaust manifolds already on. My research here suggests for a basically stock car longtubes aren’t worth the expense or headaches. But I’ve always been a fan of longtime headers.

Headers will add power, the more serious effort the more power. That being said headers have some issues like they take up a bunch of room making it harder to work on. Cheap ones leak and rust. You can get some respectable power using the manifolds. My best is 11.79 117 with 68 340 manifolds.

I believe any 68-76 A body manifolds for a 340/360 will work. The drivers side has a very noticeable shape needed to clear the steering.

I used 72 340 manifolds on my 69 cuda with a 360, as they were much cheaper ($200) as opposed to the 68-70 which go for $5-600.

I believe that the drivers side exhaust head pipes are the same from 68-73. The passenger sides are different because the exhaust manifolds are different shapes.

Hello, all,
I'm looking to put a 340 from an e-body into a 73 swinger. Will the high-flow exhaust manifolds that came on the original 70 Challenger 340 fit without hitting anything or creating a problem with running the pipes? Passenger side # 2863549 Driver side # is unknown but it looks just like # 3614368 on photo.

Are you referring to a picture in this thread for the drivers side? I only see two passenger side.

Can you post a picture of what you have?

This is a photo of the motor & 340 manifold that JOTDB73 is referring to. The part is a Year One component and doesn't have a casting number.

It looks pretty much identical to casting # 3614368, but any subtle differences could be problematic.

The repop manifolds are direct replacements for 68-70 340 manifolds for an A-body
