1965 Formula S 5800 miles

red grill stock.....interesting......debate on whether its stock or what color got painted grills or what plant did it?

Great video......and we heard the legit sound of an early straight through muffler. All 65 Formula S cars did not sound the same. The early versions were much louder and had a signature snap, crackle and pop when decelerating.
Thanks for sharing

Painted as opposed to what? I've only seen body color grilles on the original paintcars that i've seen. The red 65 is an incredible resource for future restorations.

Pishta, I have not found any evidence that '65 Barracuda grills were black from the factory. They were all body color, including Formula S cars. Some owners do choose to paint them black, but its not stock. Curious to know why you think it debatable, have any evidence of factory black '65 grills (other than on a black car)?

I would not call that evidence of factory black grills, those are just random photographs. As I said, where is the evidence they came from the factory black? Many have been re-painted, I've read on several occasions of owners of '65s deciding to paint their grill black because they prefer it. Some also like to carry the stripe down the grill too, also not stock.

There are a few that looked unrestored or very nicely restored.

Just sayin'

So...are you inferring there was only one muffler (I assume the special rear resonator) on early '65 F/S cars? If so, I would like know more, because I am restoring an "early" car build date 12-14-1964, and the parts book clearly shows two mufflers, two part numbers, in the breakout for all '65 with 4bbl Power Pack 273. Clarify please, if you can.

The illustration looks to be body color center grill to me, as do the other factory photos I have. Never seen an original paint '65 with black center grill (except a black body). Are you referring to the left and right grills? The black there is paint from the radiator support showing through the chrome grill halves, and the black detail paint applied to the L & R grill screens, which all '65s had.

I'll check my library. I might have som factory photos.

If you go by that picture, they didn't even have tailpipes
Ordering information from Plymouth. I got sidetracked with the word "black". I was talking about the side panels and not the center. We would have to see some original color photos and maybe not just artist drawings like I posted above.

Found on ebay

Your car was assembled with the early style straight through muffler. Then after the rear end you had a black painted resonator. The early style had a square exhaust outlet with no rounded ends. With complaints from the Police Department (too loud) and people scratched their leg on the edge of the resonator Chrysler stopped the use of the black resonator and added the new style with a stainless steel square tip with rounded end. However they used the left overs of the black painted resonators til mid Februay of 1965 when the new style was used.

To be picky, it's for a 1966 car.
I only copied it, what's the difference between the one I posted and the one on the red 65?
The below copy and paste is from mymopar.com
2660445 65-67 COMPACT REAR MUFL & CHROME EXH DEFL ASSY W/ SINGLE, 1 4BBL
I'm thinking that if you had a '65 Formula S and a year later you needed a muffler this is what you'd get even though the date is late 65

9-65 production date is for a 66 model.

Dartcharger, thanks for the feedback. I have an NOS '65 resonator in the box that I plan on using on my '65 FS. I have heard rumors over the years of these painted black but have not been able to pin anything down. When you say "straight through muffler" I assume you mean the muffler before the differential, not the resonator, right? Exactly what does "straight through" mean? A muffler with no baffles inside? Evidently it was not in the parts book because I can find no evidence of it. How about the resonator, was it painted all black? Here is a picture of my NOS piece:

Beautiful! I will get a picture of how it looks. What is the assembly date on your car?

In your case this is the way the resonator looks like. No stainless steel tip with rounded ends. Just simple a straight cut on it. From the date Chrysler suspended the old style resonator they on some assembly lines used the new ones but also continued to use the old style til they were gone! My is date coded 11 - 64 meaning November 1964. My car was assembled January 27, 1965.
