SO i got my son a 74 dart for his 10th birthday. Going to be a project car for us to do together until its his first car at 16. It came with a slant 6 and since it will be his first car I dont want to throw to much power and have him do something stupid so I crunch the numbers and found that 275hp /275 ftlbs ~ will give him a decent power to weight. I plan to throw a few upgrades to the motor to help support the supercharger to hopefully hit that magical number. My main question is if everything is beefed up ( engine, tranny, rear end) how well would it handle those numbers?

The /6 already has decent torque related to it’s c.i. displacement. If you’re planning on ending up with a supercharged engine anyway, You might as well do the engine upgrades first.
Some easy and relatively cheap mods would be to get a better intake (2 bbl. or 4 bbl.) And a good header/exhaust system. Next you may want to have the head shaved and ported to raise the compression ratio and breathe better, along with a better cam. You should already have a double row timing chain, so while you’re doing the head work and cam, replace that and the gears too.
These mods alone should significantly wake up your slant, and you can be driving it while you upgrade without months of downtime, since you don’t have to do it all at once like a supercharger.
I would think for a first time driver this would be plenty of performance.

Great HotRod choice.
The super cures the biggest things that ail the 225, lack of room for big valves, swept volume, and exhaust restriction. You will need a specialty cam.
Crank it up!

Also forgot to mention – adding lightness is like free horsepower.
Aluminum intake manifold, accessory pulleys, mounting brackets, radiator, driveshaft, lightweight headers, wheels, anything you can do to shed pounds without compromising safety will increase your power-to-weight ratio.
Have Fun!

dont shave heads or deck block less thay need it then just do the minimum to clean them up! gonna want invest in forged pistons figured to 7ish to 1 compression! as mentioned above need a cam designed for super charging! what type charger you thinking? and you going blow threw carb or some type of efi??? boost levels? stock /6 take 8 to 10 pounds and live a lil while but sooner or later youll be buying forged slugs for sure!

You won't reach 275HP with a slant six without some help from some sort of power adder. Nitrous, a blower or a turbo. Well, you MIGHT do it naturally aspirated, but it would be one ROWDY Slant Six. Just build it. It will be snappy and fun nonetheless.

I’d put a torquestorm supercharger on the slant. Upgrade the rear end to an 8.25, make sure the front has disc brakes. Some bigger torsion bars and a front sway bar. Then your son will be set, just my 2 cents

There are many boosted slants running stock pistons and rods successfully.
The tune is important.

If you have the parts & the means, over build everything with the thought of adding more HP later on. That way you won't have to build the entire car twice.

My personal opinion. All young folks have different levels of responsibility. But for a first car, I would be very careful about it having too much of a temptation of being on the "loud" pedal. At least till he gets some driving experience.

Hello, Linked is a post that mentions a couple of well known slant six racers that have not have issues with running stock slant six pistons and rods with boost
Limits of cast pistons on boost? - Slant Six Forum

Dirty white boy, please provide a link to support your claims that stock slant six pistons and rods will not support low to medium boost with proper tuning,

here is quote from one of those posts "get well above 400 HP with stock-type internals, but I like to take my time and not blow things up."

I know Lou and have raced against Lou,, so Dirty White Boy, please respond with evidence to your insight. Have you ever been a participant in a Slant Six . Org Drag Race? Please respond with where and when.

@Charrlie_S races his nitrous car with a stock bottom end. They are way more stout than given credit for.

Most of my engines are stock rotating assemblies. I usually spray about 175 hp shot. I have sprayed as high as 225 on a 170 engine. Yes, I have broken pistons, but stock cast and forged, both. But not because of the piston. Some because of not enough ring gap, some due to detonation. One due to a fuel system problem causing big time lean.
PS: I spin my 170's to about 6800rpm, and my 225 to about 5800rpm.

Those things were already on my to do list

I thought about just building everything up to handle the supes and them maybe a bit down the road adding it..he will be auto crossing to know how to drive the car and what his limits are with it in a safe environment
