After messing around with my steering coupler, I realized that I have a type of "shoe" that is a little different from the ones I've found online. I also haven't found a diagram in the shop manual. Here's a picture of what I have - does anyone have a diagram showing the orientation of the shoes/springs inside the coupler? Thanks!

check out the witness marks on the flat side of the shoes and the corresponding "flats" of the springs. I don't have the shaft handy, but here's a photo of how they go.

btw- let me know if you have an extra spring. I've been looking for one for a while.

Oh good, that's how I thought they went. I don't have an extra spring - sorry. I think some previous mechanic assembled my coupler with the springs on the outside of the shoes; no wonder it was loose!

Check this out. The 3 styles and I just jammed the later style shoes and springs in.

I tried it both with the new rebuild kit and the old parts assembled correctly...I went with the originals, just because I didn't like that there was really nothing holding my new spring in but spring tension the way I installed it (the new spring is too tall for the coupler when installed correctly). The bottom picture has the original parts and that's how I put it back together.

I realize now that I used the middle coupler on my 66. I had the 3 styles and my overhaul kit was the later one. Yes the spring wouldnt fit in the first bold so I used the middle one. I originally had the square one like you. I also trimmed the tube for number 7 header clearance.
