Hello to all, im helping a friend button up some details on his M code. One question is his original mastercylinder , lid, lid hold down bracket and the bolt. Does anyone know for sure what finishes are correct for these items? the car has 4 manual drum brakes and of course a 440.... what is left natural? what is plated? what type /color plating? any help from the experts would be appreciated... thanks Mad dog

Master cylinder should be black, made in Canada. A-body M/C are different than B-body, they are 3/4 size. To be original , I had to buy NOS.

1965 were they in casted finish and some brown/black/grey phosphate finish on the cover and bolt. Were they really painted black?

thanks for the replys, you say the MC should be black, does that include the cap, hold down bracket and the bolt too ?

Yes NOS ones I believe were all black but not sure on production line cars were black

Master cylinder was natural and left to rust. Cap was gold iridite, hold down clamp and bolt were silver phosphate. I will try and find some pictures I have but they were on a computer that just died, so I am trying to recover. Most people still paint the master cylinder black, especially people who like their cars over restored...

Here is a picture of the 1968 Mr. Norms Dart GSS that I helped restore, they are identical on 1969 Dart GTS 440 M-Code also...

Hey HemiSSDart, thanks for the response, is silver phosphate the same as zinc phosphate plating ? if not what is it ?

Yep, sorry about that, zinc phosphate is silver, brain is only working at idle speed at the moment...

this is a picture of the engine bay of my 1969 383 Formula S Barracuda 4 speed. i believe this car is very original. the car has factory front disc brakes and rear drums. the brake master cylinder is all black as is the cover. the unit has a lot of dirt and grease on it and the cover has some surface rust so it may be original.

Beautiful restoration. I've seen a couple of restored cars with bigblock engines having chrome valve covers. Was that an option on HP engines? I've never seen them on smallblocks. I know Hustle stuff had them.

Disc brake master cylinders are a different animal.

The 383 Darts and Barracudas all have factory chrome valve covers, the 69 440 A-Body's all had painted valve covers. The GSS's had chrome valve covers because that is the way Mr. Norm wanted them...

The title for this thread is quite misleading. Sounds like someone might have a question about a ‘69 M code car, not a specific item on a M code. Perhaps this could be moved to the brakes section?

i dont think it was misleading at all, HemiSSDart and others helped me with my M code restoration and the information was much appreciated...
