Linkage is a far superior setup, any particular reason you want to do this?
 
you will be making or buying brackets anyway. that may or may not be an issue for you
 
The shifter arm on the tranny is pretty stiff when moving from position to position, park to reverse etc.. Would be tuff to get cable rigid enough to work properly. Anything can be done, but sometimes things aren't always solved well differently.

cable shifters use a Morse cable and brackets to hold the cable cover in place. if your building something from scratch or universal, it's way easier than linkage

Being a product of the UK, I know now why I never heard of it. Definitely looks like it would get the job done. The education on this site is so enlightening to show all the different ways to get a job done.
