For a winter project I'm going to install subframe connectors in my 66 Barracuda. I've already picked up the 1 1/2 x 3 rectangular tubing material, but now I'm not sure I can use it.

While looking down the underside of the car it looks like the floor braces that come off the rockers need to be cut. It looks, to me, like the braces are going to interfere.

Before I start hacking things up. Can anyone tell me for sure I need to cut them shorter?

I would use something a little smaller like 2 inch, 3 is a little overkill. And yes the braces may need to get trimmed. Cut them flush against the sub frame connector and weld them together. The more you can tie together the stiffer the chassis.

Go on the US cartool web site. Look at how theirs angle in toward the front to line up perfectly with the front frame rails. You can easily section them at the rear to make them angle over and cut them at the proper angle in the front. Then, you won't have to cut the braces at all and they will be aligned with the front frame rails.

Thanks RRR hadn't thought about angling them. I little more fab work, but it looks easy enough to accomplish. If I have to I'll get some smaller tubing.

Everyone does them a little differently. Each way takes a little creativity, cutoff wheel, welder, and grinder. Not to mention every one of these cars are slightly different. Depending on where you place the front side of the connector, some may need trimming of those braces, where others don't. I used 2 x 3 tubing (with the 3" side vertical) on my 66. I think I had to trim one of the braces and butted the other one right to the connector. I welded the ends of both braces to the connector. It worked out nicely.

Started my frame connectors today. Passenger side is fabbed up and ready to weld in. Drivers side will be done tomorrow. I did have to trim one of the braces that comes off the rocker.

Nice! I built an 84 CJ7 a long time ago, then an 81Toyota mini truck, then a 92 Chevy Silverado. I had the most fun four wheeling with the Toyota since I lived near the mountains when I owned it...and I was young and fearless, lol.
