Don’t get fleeced by MSD
They advertise that their 8680 controller will advance and retard the timing
NOT the case it will only retard
I called them and told them their advertising was false and they quickly changed the subject
I have read on other read on other websites that this was the case
Has anyone used the 8987???
Buyer beware “caveat emptor”

Page 2 of the instructions tells you how to set it up for using the advance and retard function. That doesn't sound like false advertising to me.

It can only retard the timing. That's physics...they get installed at 0 or +10 and they are by default -10 or? And then retard another 10 for -20 or it can not retard at all and have the timing "advance 10" to actually be at +10. Where do they say to install them at degree wise?

Sounds like either I need to get my foot out of mouth and looking k for a rock to crawl under

Not necessarily the right answer but...

If I set the static timing to be 10 more than I wanted and used the device to retard the timing 10 it would be set to where I wanted it to be. but if I removed retard from the device it would now be advanced.

Does that make sense?

Absolutely correct. That's the only way these can function.

You set it at 15 advanced (actually no electronic retard), then "It is possible to set the Timing Control up to where you can retard and advance the timing 7.5° each..To do this, position the Control Knob in the center (approximately 7.5°) then reset the timing to factory specifications. So center pot is 0 and your timing is based on this.

NOT MSD, but
That's how I adjust my Jacobs. But I call it a timing-retard box.....
I set mine to advance 6/ retard 9.
So while my idle-timing is normally set to,
14*; I can, from the driver's seat, adjust it to;
20* when Cold, or to;
5* for Parking-lot parades, or to;
52* for Cruising; which is 14+10+22+ up to 6=52* @2240rpm=65mph

Its hard to wrap your head around at first . But think of it this way... the MSD ( in my case Daytona Sensors) cant see into the future . So you advance your timing then it retards it at idle and brings it back in as the rpms increase.

Thanks for all your posts guys I’m sure I can manage from here looks like I will be ordering a timing tape. Looks like the old saying “necessity is the mother of invention “ applies here.
