MSD false advertising

Not necessarily the right answer but...
If I set the static timing to be 10 more than I wanted and used the device to retard the timing 10 it would be set to where I wanted it to be. but if I removed retard from the device it would now be advanced.
Does that make sense?

NOT MSD, but
That's how I adjust my Jacobs. But I call it a timing-retard box.....
I set mine to advance 6/ retard 9.
So while my idle-timing is normally set to,
14*; I can, from the driver's seat, adjust it to;
20* when Cold, or to;
5* for Parking-lot parades, or to;
52* for Cruising; which is 14+10+22+ up to 6=52* @2240rpm=65mph
