Who makes the best, trouble free lifters?

 Hydaulic lifters are very troublesome these days. I dont have the answer but interested in discussion. Not really related but my 500 engine when new sounded like a bunch of marbles were in it at idle. adjusted lifters everywhich way, 1/4 turn up to 3/4 turn preload. Lack of money I bought Echlin lifters and installed new internal retaining rings. Still the same. As it turns out the HL cam is noisey. unless I go solid I have to live with it. I bought a new solid cam and lifters but the car runs soo good I haven't changed it. Had good luck with lifters but not recomending them.

Seems like most all complain about Comp Cam Lifters failing.
I am one of those guys. To me a better built lifter have the real snap rings instead of the wire retainer. When several of my Comp lifters failed (Twice) I went with Lunati.

Rhodes lifters, quality USA product but a slightly different animal. For people who don't mind solid lifter type "noise" but like and engine that with a wider power band.

Rhode's are a love 'um or hate 'um. I see benefits in using them.
Yes they tend to be noisy.

I had a couple Lunatis fail. Went with Comp cams and when the engine heats up I get ticking.

I couldn't agree more. I had two sets of Comp lifters crap the bed on me and refuse to buy anymore.

I have a set of them, and I don't mind them. They haven't failed and aren't that noisy (especially over loud exhaust). I'm not sure about the wider power band though, but I think their claim to that fame is that it kills duration down low. I don't know if that exactly works like they say.

I used the Echlin because my Dad (Oldschool mechanic) said he had good luck with them back in the day but after searching can't seem to find any listing for them now. The one's I replaced were comp. cam before.

What is the problem are they made overseas? I recall a "ticking" lifter in a 318,but it cleared up after running for a while. i want to say they were standard "sealed Power" parts,it was almost 20 years ago:)

Who makes the best lifters? That's easy - Kohler Engines based in Kohler WI USA
I have had a Kohler 22 hp engine my ZTR now for 5 years and the hydraulic lifters never clatter, are queit and perform very well.
All the rest are pretty much junk.

Thats what I am hearing. China junk
Yeah I fear that one day we will have to reuse "old" USA made stuff. there is a way to check /clean oil pumps for example. You can also disaasemble and clean out/ inspect lifters too by the way. The standard practice is to just replace them, but if they are catastrophic failure prone due to the "overseas" factory using plastic or aluminum, you are better off with the old metal part keep in mind the "powers that be" dont want these old cars on the road. it will be difficult and expensive in the future to drive old iron..:)

Most likely your best bet would be to find a set of NOS Mopar lifters (good luck) or find a good used set and have them re crowned and cleaned.

no lifter is the same

I found somewhere that Schneider racing cams (San Diego) sells "Made in USA" lifters (I might need to see the USA factory in person to believe it though). If you click "more info" on the website next to the product, the window that opens claims made in USA.
