What size header would you guys use for the following engine combo. It is strictly a race only engine. Car is a 73 Duster, fenderwells are not cut and I don't want to have to cut them.

408
12:1
Trick Flow 190 heads
Victor 340 intake
.550-.571 SFT cam (I know it's small, will probably get something larger down the road)
750 carb (have 850 that will try as well)

Don't plan on turning the engine over 6500 rpm. Car weighs 3250 with driver. Currently I have a set of Doug's 1 5/8". Trying to determine if a larger tube size would help any or not.

I'm running an older set of 1 7/8" Hooker headers. I hunted long & hard to find a set to replace my existing headers which were also 1 7/8" of unknown brand. I'm running a 416 with a solid roller .690-.660, Edelbrock heads w mild porting, 750 DP/4 point idle circuit & going through the traps at 6400-6600 with a 2500 lb car on 29.5 x 10.5 slicks.

Hows the fit of the headers and what ET are you going?

1.875 primaries, 3 inch collector 20-24 inches long if running open heads, 3.5 inch collector if you have mufflers. The primaries should be 28-32 inches long.

You have a very similar combo to what i have in the works for racing this upcoming season.
I too have the Dougs headers.
I had them on my 360 with eddies that was 10 to 1
For now going to live with them on my 418 with same eddie heads.
Collector wise, i went from 3 to 3.5 inch collectors on a W5 motor i had that went well into the 9’s, and saw absolutely nothing making the swap

The set I have are slip joint, race only headers. I run a front & mid plate, the headers fit well it just takes awhile to figure getting them in. I was running 10.30's with my iron headed 408, plans are to run mid 9.00's with the 416.

The only Hooker 1.875 A body headers I’ve ever seen are the 5303’s. They are about impossible to find any more. They are a **** to install, and they only go in one way. You can’t shortcut.

When they are one, they fit incredibly well. You can get to all the plugs and they aren’t too low for what they are. Will you have the same ground clearance as you do with 1.626 tubes? No. But I run them on the street and I don’t drag them and my front end is slightly lower than OE.

If you can find a set, snatch them up right quick. TTI makes an 1.875 header, but their collectors suck. So you really need to address that. Plus, they weld the collectors on IIRC. No reason to do that. But they do it.

On the tti headers, the collectors are short and can use an extension. You can purchase these easy from Summit, Jegs, etc....

If you can dyno the engine, purchase two sets of collectors, cut down or add on to the piles length on the dyno pair until you figure out where it works best.

We are using the TTi 1 7/8 with 3 1/2 collector. I have extensions on them also.

I have 1 3/4 Headman Hustlers on my 408, but they do have 1 tube on each side that goes out the fender, car runs 10.1.....I would love to see if a 1 7/8 header (same kind) would help me at all, but for the cost, I think I'll just wait till my headers die, lol.

^^^^^ Those are some nice race only headers, but shipping from Cali to the east coast might be a deal killer.

Those are the same basic headers I have for my Demon but I have extension tubes on mine.
