the little rubber piece thats on the end of the master cylinder pushrod?

-
Life or death. It retains the pushrod inside the master cylinder piston. If the pushrod falls out you have no service brakes, now it ps the park brake and downshifting, if you have time.

As an add on to this; thanks for posting about that rubber piece.
I'm replacing the master cyl for the first time on my Barracuda (w/75 Dart manual front disc.) and didn't know about it until after I torched the old one out.

I too just found out the hard way too, I shredded mine trying to remove it.

Hmmm, mine just had rubber o-rings on it. I replaced the o-rings that where on there but haven't installed it yet. I also need the white plastic gasket that goes on the firewall behind the master cylinder. hopefully DR. Diff will have that too.

IDK about Dr. Diff, but Detroit Muscle Technologies will have it for sure.

I just went through swapping out the old pushrod for an adjustable one. I will admit that it was difficult to pull the old rod out of the master cylinder because of that small rubber ring, but added extra insurance anyway by placing a bolt with a nylon lock nut just below the rod. The clearance is about 1/8". So all together we have the ring, the dust boot (?), and the bolt. No more fear of the rod possibly falling out

To remove the push rod out of the MC. Remove the brake switch, and pull back on the brake pedal.
Pop...Out it comes.

PS: Get the correct rubber grommet, and not a piece of rubber hose, o-ring, bubble gum wrapper.
It's your life we are talking about Brakes are important, get the right part.
