1990 360 roller motor w/factory windage tray

3 1/2 hours by yourself? You were hustling. Good thing it wasn’t summer. And that doesn’t include drive time to and from.

I see online the price list shows:
ENGINE GAS (NO ACCESSORIES)
Price: $224.99
Core: $65.00

So what did they charge you for each cly head and bare block?

Block price and short block price.
Otd on short block was 192.95
Otd on block was 150.00
Heads were 51.50 ea. +core 8.60 ea & tax.
It's christmas and I don't want to be spending too much on me the other thing is you'll never catch me running stock bottom ends with any real cylinder heads on top.lol
Plus I picked up a 1978 360 a year or so back and had it bored .020 over ...and already took and had the crank ground .010 and put it aside. 'I'll just use that crank in this block' was my thinking, because it's a fresh .010 snddoesn't matter how good this yard one is. I also have some 496 floating 340 rods i can use if the stock stroke ends up in the plan.
I really didn't need this but I have the room and I know I can use it and it might be the and I know I can use it and it might just end up as another Stroker with the Speedmaster heads on it when I get done with them

California's taxes are stupid.

It was sunny but not sunburned weather. we've had pretty good weather lately.
From past experience I knew if I was going to be in the sun I needed to do it first thing and then get into the shade for the majority of the work instead of Vice Versa getting sweaty and oily and greasy then going out to the outside sun is like my least favorite thing. I brought an old beach towel and some gloves and was totally spotless until the typical junkyard thing happens when you pull a radiator in the bottom hose still attached flips back and launches the rusty as **** water all over your shirt LOL

Well I came and pulled the pan on the 360 at the yard. It’s a non roller engine, but it had a windage tray. Build date for the van was Oct ‘90. Little confused.
There is a Z in the vin. If that’s what your asking?

I took the distributor out and I can clearly see a flat tappet lifter.
Some of them came with flat tappet lifters even though they were a roller block so the key is.... is it a roller block or not, yes of course... and if you look at the actual valley.. you'll see the bolt holes to mount the roller spider ....and that's what's important and what you need to see. you scored bro, right on!

Something I came to find out while attempting to bolt on the oil pan onto my ‘70’s 360....

there appears to be 2 different sump depths for 360 truck pans... the 1989 oil pan is too shallow by about a 1/2 inch and hits the oil pickup.

the oil pickup I used is a Melling 72S5, the only one showing available for a dodge truck.
The oil pan from the later 70’s truck bolts on fine.

As long as when you ,or if you.. have to bend it up to allow the pan install it is still level with the sump and not aimed upward at the front.
.
Allow me to whip this out.
The stock oil pump pickup is supposed to rest "flat" against the bottom of the pan.

Im no oil pan aficionado, but i wouldn't be surprised to find diff sump depths as the chassis changed generations.

I must not have wiped it out far enough.

It does not matter which oil pan it is the pickup is supposed to sit flat against the bottom. In a stock pan.

Well. I was sittin on the pot and decided to check inventory at the local Pick-N-Pull again just to see what they had. They listed a ‘91 ram van with a 360. I had to go and check it out. Odometer read 90,479 miles. Ended up pullin it out, after I removed the distributor and looked inside I saw roller lifters. $234 Out the door.

I just pulled a ‘92 LA 360 out of a Ramcharger this weekend. I’ll have to check when I get it up on the stand and see if it has a windage tray also. That would be rather nice.

They didn’t have a 308 casting but it did say 587? I think?
So as we keep learning here.. is it that if it doesn't have a roller cam in it 'even though it has the provisions' ..that it won't have the 308 or big push rod hole heads and can have any of the later standard LA heads instead. Good to know.

Right on!

What I found interesting about the ‘92 motor I pulled was that it did not have the timing cover machined for a fuel pump. Others I have seen are machined and have a blockoff plate, like the one mopardude posted. Here’s mine:

This one also has the roller gear inside:

I assume it still has a long snout cam, but the timing cover kind of makes me wonder.

Although the motor came out of a ‘92, it has the earlier 89-91 casting number: 53006921. Probably an early model year production ‘92.

The camshaft wear on the one I pulled looks identical to your picture. I wonder if I clean up the engine a little, and put all new gaskets, flush out the block and install new freeze plugs, maybe I can run it for a little while.
