Hi All
I’m wanting to build a fast cranky slant 225 6cyl !! Something between a drag, race engine but able to drive on the road.
I want it to have a lumpy cam and whatever else is needed to make some big HP numbers I’d like to get 300rwhp + .
I’m not a mechanic and don’t know what works to get that type of HP so I’d really appreciate it if those who have built these before, and have got these types of results!, if they could Please elaborate on what they did to there engines in detail so I can build something similar.
I have friends that are mechanics so hoping I can get the block, head and other engine bits and pieces and give it to them to put it together for me.
I’d really appreciate any help and you time letting me know.
Thanks

To get a slant 6 to go really fast............................................................................................install a 360!!:poke:

give or take a few

What abodyjoe said and the slant six forum right here at FABO.
300 hp is unreasonable in an all motor steetable car. It's well known that the head is the limiting factor.

But, a turbo is the way to make power for what you want to do.

you can't get past the lousy head so you need to force induct it to get those power levels. if you want a fun street car, get some 3.91-4.30 gears behind a slant with a 2 or 4bbl intake and a good 2.25 exhaust or headers, but its gonna run out of steam fast. 300WRHP through a 904 and a rear will be closer to 330HP net

For those power numbers, you're going to have to use a blower or turbo or nitrous. You won't get there naturally aspirated.

So there you go, and for your first post as well.
Welcome to the Forum, I hope you stay with us.
You need to explain what car you have and what you want to do with it.
The are some here who don't like a slant, so you are going to get the V8 answers.
But 300 from a slant is not going to be easy or cheap.

Well I ain't a hater. I drive one all the time.

Not calling anyone out, just trying to help the guy out.
I know you Rusty, if the OP sticks around, he will get some good help from you.

Steve Dulcich (Roadkill Garage) put together a hot supercharged slant that made around 300hp but that blower kit was 3 grand at least! They ran it N/A once and it made ~220hp at the crank. He ported the head, shaved quite a bit off and put a good cam in it, then topped it with a 4 barrel. So that's about as good as it gets as far as I have seen.

If I ever find a spare slant I'm going to look around at other OHC cylinder heads that might fit...

My other post was just a joke. In all seriousness, anything can make power. When I was a kid and cruising central ave in Minneapolis, there was a crapped out blue 73/74 challenger with a /6, that had a fricking blower. Not sure what it came off of, but he could RUN.

Do you ever wish sometimes you had a stout V-8? Or do you love the power and sound of one? Only reason I ask is aside from some of the rabid diehard hardcore Slant 6 guys out there that live and breathe and will do everything to help (and convince) you build a stout slant, you may be disappointed with the cost and outcome if it's your first Slant. It'll never satisfy like a V-8 I don't care what anyone says. Slants are cool, visually and can be impressive beasts but you WILL trade away street manners if lumpy lumpy and radical are part of the equation. Power boosters as mentioned would be your best bet, but $$$$$$$$$

A big pile of cash!
and a whole lot more.I went the normally aspirated route with head work, offset ground crank, light weight rods, pistons and crank.Whole ball of wax cost me right around $14K Why ? cause I wanted to reach 325 HP but was shy and made 308 if I remember. That was 16 or so years ago.

Runs high 12's with 3.73 Sure grip gears at the time.Worked manual valve body 904.Sold it with a new set of 4.30's and a spool. New owner runs high 12's low 13's and still is racing it.

It's those dang blow-through carbs that can get make it expensive, fast!

no doubt, but the point of the reference was it can be done and doesn't need to be tig welded stainless etc. hell, could be done with mostly junkyard parts. Street racers do this kind of stuff all the time. A lot of them take it as a personal challenge to do it on the cheap of simply have no choice.

Improvise, Adapt and Overcome.. :)

Slant 6 and cheap guys go together like bourbon and water.:poke:
I have plans to build one more going for max torque and installing it in a B body.:wtf:
We will see..

Only fiberglass was the bumpers. The rest all steel .Car was 2680 without driver.
Fun times,,I sure miss those days.

I have been building low dollar slants for more years then I care to remember. The only way to make 300 hp without cubic dollars is with a turbo (if you can do the work yourself), or nitrous.

Look up mad max here. Mark has a fast N/A slant but did it with the help of a very light chassis, ala Lotus. "Performance through weight reduction"
