1969 Dodge Dart Swinger clean up

-
Don't want to remove the heater hoses. Poster tubes work great.

Rocker covers cleaned.

Bolt holes dollied flat.
1969dartswingerweek6 153.JPG

Have a couple of wiring clips to weld or replace before paint.

Got my new see through rocker covers in place.
1969dartswingerweek6 156.JPG

Hours of wiping the thing down with lacquer thinner. It doesn't even bite the old paint, but immediately removes the fresh stuff on the upper.

More signs of the correct Turquoise paint from days of old.

Gave one side on the rear of the intake a quick spray with the new paint so it can sit overnight and determine if it's lifts the respray that the previous owner shot, that lacquer thinner was wiping off.

I’d like to see your repair process on those wiring clips.
Wishing I'd bought the spot welder that the local radiator shop had for sale last year, would make it easier putting new ones on. I'll figure something out tomorrow...

dadsbee, you are "the man" for sure when it comes to what you're doing, proven by what you've done prior to this "clean-up" so no offense intended here. A suggestion prior to painting your engine, consider using an adhesion promoter. It really helps the paint stick to those tiny spots you can't get to as well as you'd wish to, especially if you're going over existing paint. I've had great success using SEM 77723 ***. Once again just a suggestion. Looking awesome brother!

Thanks! We're on full lock down in Ontario so I've gotta work with what I've got on hand in the shop. I'll get all the grease off this thing, scuff it up and take my best "shot"....

I’ve got a couple on my valve covers that have broken off too.

I thought about welding the broken ends up but I figured that would create a unbendable hard spot on the clip. I guess manufacturing a new clip is the best way to go.

Look forward to seeing what fix you come up with.

Well by the time I did the grocery run to get us through another few weeks and tracked down some AWOL postal packages I didn't get much done, but have all of the "Black" engine parts ready for paint. Need to blast the covers and fix those wire tabs. Probably try welding the one together that I have the piece for, but I'll have to make a new one for the nose of the cover.

In case anyone wants to take plug wire clips off their rocker covers without breaking them, the lock tab is on the side with the ejector pin marks in it. Of course you know how I figured this out....

Paint coming off.

Dug into my 4 shipping crates or parts that I've been hauling around since I was 16/17, some 42 years ago, and found me a nice 7 blade fan, some spacers and one c/w bolts. I've always wondered about the thought process on these. 7 blades is weird enough, unequal spacing takes the cake!

OEM fan and spacer within an 1/8" of the aftermarket arm slicer that I'm taking off the car.

Vendor #46237.. part number 2863224. That number is for each blade, not sure the assembly number.

Why I'm living with (for now) the incorrect '70 rocker covers that have the breather and PCV valve on incorrect sides for '69. Some jackass cut the back (front actually) out of a perfectly good OE cleaner top. If I swap in correct 1969 rocker covers, then I have to get a new air cleaner as well.

I " think" the older slant 6 or 2bl sb had the same air cleaner top?
I'll get her back on the road and then start the fine tinkering next year. I've bought enough parts for her for now! lol Rocker covers easy to paint later and install.

dadsbee,

If you have a few cans of that Turquoise engine paint left over, I’d be interested in purchasing them from you.

Maybe it would be an excuse for us to meet (and take my Bug for out for a spin too)

Will have to see what I have left, as I'll be keeping a few cans for my stock. As soon as my order was processed Jegs changed their sales listing to USA shipping only! In the end it cost me 30 bucks a can and I didn't get dinged for tax or any brokerage nonsense like UPS and Fedex did to me. UPS billed me for $100 on my PST order that I was assured was going USPS and then Mancini using Fedex (instead of USPS) for my $128 worth of header gaskets and bolts... I just got my love letter from Fedex and they're looking for $80! Collecting taxes on stuff under $200 is just wrong.. + their handling, brokerage, "on your behalf" and tax on that on top!

Spin won't happen anytime soon. Wife is immune compromised and the only "spinner" I get to hang with!

I was tired of paying those ridiculous fees too, so I opened an account with Cross Border Pickups which brings parcels from Buffalo across to Mississauga (close to my work) for a very reasonable fee, $7.50-$15.00 depending on parcel size.

Hopefully after this virus crap is over we can meet up sometime.

Anyhow, I wouldn’t want to torture you with a 60 HP Beetle....:steering:

There'd be no need if vendors shipped the way you asked and were promised was happening. I was quoted and assured PST was shipping USPS.. and then they apparently "did me a favour" and shipped it Brown truck. Mancini the same BS but Fedex.

Layson’s did the same to me. I purchased a set of Rallye wheel center caps at Moparfest and fully paid for them. They only had 1 left in the truck, so Dave said no problem, we’ll ship you the other 3 center caps through USPS when they arrived back home.

3 weeks later I was on afternoon shift and my wife gets a knock on the door and Mr. UPS wants $150 in brokerage, customs fees and sales tax. My wife paid it and calls me at work freaking out about the charges.

It turned out that someone at Layson’s filled out the invoice as 3 sets of 4 center cap kits instead of 3 individual center caps.

You would not believe the hassle it was to get the brokerage, customs charges and sales tax refunded from UPS and Revenue Canada because of Layson’s error.

Insult to injury. UPS sent me an invoice to pay the $100. NOW DUE. I mailed them a cheque for the $97.79. 3 weeks later I get my Visa card statement to find UPS billed my CCard for the $97.79 that they apparently have on file from years ago. So now they've been paid twice! Giving them 2 weeks to see if they credit me or send me back my cheque, then hells fury comes out...

Oh yeah, I'd believe it, the CRA don't give up a nickel without fighting them tooth and nail. I HATE paying the brokerage charges and fees that UPS and FEDEX charge, pure financial rape in my mind, I used to handle all of the shipments bound for the U.S. from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and NW Ontario for Purolator courier in the early 80's. I also have done my own brokering and customs clearing, it really is simple, a bit time consuming, but well worth the savings IMO.

UPS. What pricks.....

For most of them, it's literally a few keystrokes on the computer, an e-mail to CRA, and they charge you $$$$, doing it yourself, well let's face it they don't want you to, requires a little legwork and time, you still pay the tax, but no exorbitant brokerage fee.

Sad when UPS charges more for a small box than I can clear an entire tractor trailer load of material for my plastics plant through Near North Custom Brokers in Barrie!

NEVER anything but USPS/Canada Post for me. UPS/FEDEX both got me once. Never again. I paid $25 more to have this pkg from Al in Fla $65 US in shipping USPS vs $40 from UPS. I'll "gladly" pay a little more to have it come with no surprises
Only 10 lbs.
Hope you get the $$ back.

YEP.. like I said, wasn't my doing. And all I get is crickets after the fact from the guy at PST that assured me it was going USPS..
