Hi Folks

I have another question about OEM 273 rockers.......Are there any preferences or inherent problems using either of the rocker group spacers? By this I mean the shaft springs vs the solid spacers?

Thanks

Small blocks use the spacers. Big blocks use the springs. I can't tell you why that is though.

I prefer the solid spacers & the thin shims from Mancini. That way I get the rockers VERY close to the center of the valve stem & there is no deflection. With the springs I found side to side deflection at higher RPM's. Just keep in mind, my application is drag race only.

TMM, I've had 2 or three sets of the SBM OEM rocker sets that had springs, the set I'm currently using I converted to spacers & shims. I then found a set of older Isky or Crane rockers & replaced the OEM rockers.

I have never seen original untouched 273 rockers with springs. And I've seen a lot.

Interesting.......I've got a set bought, paid for and shipped supposed to be for a sbm.......WITH SPRINGS.......Hopefully I don't kiss that $$ away LOL (wouldn't be the first time!)

I'll look in my storage & see if I still have a set. When I started building the original 360 for the Demon is when I bought them. The engine & valve train have changed drastically since then.

Some aftermarket SBM rockers used springs. You did the right thing by using spacers and shims. Big blocks and early Hemi's OEM used springs.

The Crane iron adjustable small block rocker kits came with springs.

I've had over 50 sets of those 273 rocker sets through the years and never saw a set with springs. Some had banana grooves in the shafts and some didn't however. Easy to add though.

Man I hope these things aren't big block. Is there any market for big block rockers if they are?

2 holes.......One round one adjacent to the rocker arm to supply oil to the ball and socket, and one hole in the middle of the banana groove at about 5:30 when viewed from the end.

Big block iron rockers will likely have the adjuster off center while small block LA adjusters are centered in the rocker.

For the shafts small block’s are 19” long and big blocks are longer - 19.5” if I recall.

These are Isky's on a 440. Copies of oem but the adjusters are different and have a locknut. Looks like they are offset. The small block ones aren't.

Thanks for the info guys. I picked up a new lunati cam and lifters, 273 ? rocker set, pushrods, and a set of Crane jam nut adjusters in a parts package. Waiting for it to arrive.....

The rocker arms are all straight.

Small blocks use the spacers. Big blocks use the springs. I can't tell you why that is though.

Because big blocks have more room between the rockers. It was cheaper for Chrysler to use springs there instead of spacers.
