71 Duster Hood Scoops

Looking to learn something today.
Did the Duster twin scooped hoods have opening for fresh air to the engine compartment or were they just show. I picked up a factory hood for the twin scoops but they don't have openings for air to the engine. Are there pictures of the fresh air carb setups for this hood?

I may have found my answer.
Back in Jan. of 2010 this looks to be address here at FABO. There's a lot of info about dusters and adding holes that weren't there from the factory.

I believe they did it both ways. Some have openings and some did not. I recently got a hood and scoops for my 65 dart. The scoops were attached to the hood but no openings for the air. I basically made a template off my 69 super bee hood to add the openings for the fresh air.

That looks good. In the write up they show 4 inch circle holes. In your Super Bee do you have a fresh air system for the carb, or are the holes just open to the engine compartment?

The super bee has the intake system on it. The dart does not yet. I plan on making my own.
 
The A body hoods had the circle cut outs for fresh air. The circles line up with the holes in the 70-71 snorkle-less air cleaner. Not directly connected but it did provide the engine with cooler outside air. Holes in the hood used a rubber grommet with a raised lip to keep water out of the engine compartment. Scoops sit slightly raised in the back to allow water to escape.
 
Not functional on any OEM twin scoop Duster I've ever seen. They were purely for looks. Have a factory twister hood here, no opening.

The 70 Dart could have the cut out.

That's the same as this hood, factory application holes but blank inlet. Thanks
 
Is there any specs on the size of the holes? I've seen posts that say 4" and some say 4 1/8". I'm ready to buy a hole saw to make the holes but I want to make them the right size to fit the rubber grommets .
 
Part of the issue on a Duster is the frame structure. The Dart hood usually has an easier time with cutting a hole and a small crescent in the structure to accommodate it.
 
Yeah 4 1/8" I remember having to buy a hole saw to convert a hood once.
I had a 72 340 demon with the double scoop and it had two holes under it from the factory. The dart hoods and the cutouts in the under bracing 70-72 even if they did not have scoops.
I never had a duster with scoops, maybe the functional scoops was a dodge only thing.

4-1/8” is the proper finished size. But if you’re making the cut with a hole saw, using a 4” hole saw is probably a good idea. I used a 4-1/8” hole saw but the holes ended up slightly larger. They’re not 4-1/4” or anything but they’re a bit larger than 4-1/8”. I think using a 4” hole saw and then cleaning up with a file and some sandpaper would be the way to go.

He’s not using the correct grommets anyway, so that’s probably the issue.

But absolutely, with the correct grommets the tall side goes up, the goal is to keep water out.

Detroit Muscle Technologies sells the proper ones. The picture on the listing shows the bottom which is a little deceiving, but they do have the tapered shoulder on top. They fit well on my Duster (dart hood because it’s a demon clone). They’re just a touch loose on my car, they’d be perfect for an actual 4-1/8”.

The thick part is on top...have done a few of these over the years LOL
I saw another member use these and thought I would give them a try...gotta say I like the idea...nice rubber and saved around $60 for something no one really sees LOL

Interesting, I was going to use these on my 70 Duster I’m changing over to 71 in E/SA to use the TQ, I thought it was legal (been looking for a hood, missed one in Florida that had it all). I’ll ask my friend in Tennessee who has raced his since new about this.
 
I have a bone stock '70 Swinger 340. The holes are 4 1/8", and have a small grommet with the lip up into the scoop. I'm recovering from knee surgery today, but I'll get out there in my garage for pictures if it will help clear things up. My car has the black wrinkle finish, and the factory "unsilenced" air cleaner. There are no foam or other ducts from the scoops to the air cleaner, but the scoops are shaped to direct air into the sides of the air cleaner base on the sides.

Just so it's clear the grommet goes with the big side up to keep water sheeting up the hood from ending up in the engine compartment.

When you cut your holes pay attention to the air dam in the bottom of the scoops - you want the hole in front of the dam and pushed to the side that fits into the air dam shape.
