Speedmaster intake porting. Hopefully I can make something out of this

That’s a burr finish in the pictures and will be going on just like that.

I like that. I read where some guys say it’s quicker to burr finish, but I can’t just burr it and let it go. It looks like crap on a cracker if I try that.

I have been working on my burrs to get the right amount of “bend” to it so I can get the surface finish I want and still be able to hang on to the the damned thing and be able to use it for more than 5 minutes. I think I have that worked out.

I still can’t get the final shape I want without a paper roll first. Then I can go back over the paper roll finish with the burr and get what I want.

Doing it the way I am damn sure ain’t quicker, but it’s the only way I can get a decent finish with a burr.

Well if I would have started earlier and if I wasn’t hungry and if Street Outlaws wasn’t on tonight I would have finished this thing for some flow tests. The radius’s are shaping up nicely and the runners are all done so if I hit the shop tomorrow I should have some numbers. Here are a few quick pictures.

Like an idiot I’ve had one of these light sitting on a shelf for several years. It’s a rechargeable light that goes on your head that I saw on Facebook and ordered from Amazon. I use the other one almost weekly at the track to add fuel or checking my slicks at night. Order one or two and you won’t be sorry. Make sure you get a rechargeable one

Geez, almost seems like you need a 90* drill adapter to get the burr in some of those spots! Quite a bit different than a single plane and a heck of a lot harder.

Forming a radius out of a 90 degree turn (with limited distance) takes some creative thinking. Lol.

If you're really good, you can buy a 6" shank burr and carefully heat it a dull red about 2" from the end and put a 45 degree bend in it. That let's you reach around a lot of tight corners.

Maybe I’m missing something, but doesn’t that cause the burr to “slap” around? Seems like that would be impossible to control?

You would be suprised how smooth the 6" carbides cut. You don't force them because they are so long. I think that's why they don'tchatter.

I just have visions of that burr and handle shakin like a dog pissing peach pits:D

Going through this right now. I remember now why I hate these intakes. I was ready to shove the burr in my ear, scramble my brain, **** my pants and die right there.

For the time and effort to fix one of these is just not worth it.

Where’s the LOL button.

Also some of these Chinese intakes have the mounting bolt angles drilled incorrectly for the LA stuff.

I have a brand new 408 shortblock sitting here for my black duster. The two heads and intake will be test fitted on it before I ship everything to my son.

For as much as your bitching and moaning, I almost feel bad having you port my airgap.... LoL. Nope, I don’t feel bad, the duster is going to fly further the next time we jump it with all that extra air flow...

You know how I am...I stop bitching and then my **** ends up on the walls!!!! It’s actually turning out pretty damn nice. I’ll take some pictures in the morning and post them up if you don’t care.

Heads go in for the valve job tomorrow and the reamer and tubing will be here tomorrow too. Then it’s burr finish, CC the chambers and a port or two, surface and send it!!!

The return boxes WILL have swear words on them!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOL

Post them, let the world see what kinda **** show your working on... LoL

Well I did some glow testing today and let’s just say I’m disappointed. Lots of work for little gain

———stock SM————ported SM
.100——-83——————91
.200——-143—————148
.300——-183—————193
.400——201—————-215
.500——212—————-227
.600——221—————-235
.700——225—————-238

now just to try something I flipped it end for end and flowed another port. Both ports were within a few cfm of each other. I mainly wanted to see how both the upper and lower plenum flowed.

Now for some good news for a few guys, bad news for others, and good news for me. I have a brand new Victor340 sitting here but it is half way ported so I can’t give stock numbers. I’m going to give this project one or two days more and I’m going to finish porting the Victor intake and flow it on these heads. Pretty sure I’m not going to waste any time on Ethans UGLY Torquer intake as I gotta get busy finishing up my Edelbrock moved pushrod heads for race season.

This will be interesting. I’ve said my entire life that making air change directions just for the hell of it doesn’t make more power.

after letting the disappointment sink in a little I went back looking for a post I did 8 years ago on LD340 flow testing. That intake has to be a lot better than the Speedmaster looking back at those numbers. If I would have put the time in it that I put in this I think I would have been much happier. Here’s the link to that testing

Wow, that LD beats up on the SM AG. That is very counterintuitive because one would think the higher plenum would flow better.

Air moves in weird ways.

I'm naturally prejudiced...but I woulda never put money on the SM intake over the Elder-brock. Why? The SM intake, to me, is someone's attempt at taking market share away from companies who are already doing a good job of serving the market. In other words, it's a solution to a problem that didn't exist. That tells me it wasn't created for the right reasons (i.e. someone sought to offer a better product). Products like that seldom, if ever, are satisfying.

A few other examples....the Chinese knock-offs of Japoanese dirt bikes. The complete degradation of the go-kart market due to cheap knock-offs. The knock-off HEI distributors on Ebay for $69. The list goes on and on...

I also think there's only so much you can do with a dual plane intake, but that's another story...
