The VIN on the pan rail tells all... just because its cast in 69 doesn't mean its a 70 block.
The 1 in front of the B is the year.
The B is the assembly plant.
156652 is the last 6 of the vehicles VIN
The engine ID shows GW that means its a 71 block assembled in Windsor G =1971 W=Windsor Ont.
340 is the cu inch
P=Premium Fuel Recommended
3352 is the date it was assembled based on the 10,000 day calendar. In this case its 10-1-1970 for the 1971 model year.
0461 this engine was number 461 built that day.
A is for oversize 0.20 pistons from the factory.
Hope that helps :)

Thats the car in your pic! I know very cooool right? :) 71 Hemi Cuda' Flopper belongs to a local MI Nostalgia Driver.
The picture was taken at Milan Dragway at the Nostalgia Drags in 2018. Tim Timoszyk I believe is the owner,...I think,.... but not positive.

Interesting. I did not know that Chrysler ever had engines sitting for that long. Learn something new everyday. Thanks!

20 over from the factory that's something new to me, what might dictate that?

From January.
Doesn't look like an answer is forthcoming...

I don't know but I'll take a guess.

To salvage a bad core that was set aside after inspection and then later re-bored to 'clean it up'
or
Some factory recon deal like "Mr. Goodwrench".
Warranty re-work/replacement

Who knows? only the factory knows. The factory service manuals also confirm the engine identification letter designations.

They did the same kinda things for crankshafts. If one got a nick or some such, they just went to the first over size. Some were .001". That's when you see a maltese cross on the pad. That indicates a factory under size crank.

I do not have much 1971 info, but......

1B 156652 is from a 1971 Cuda. Being a 340, the only two possible full VINs for the car it came from would be BS23H1B156652 -or- BS27H1B156652
