Hey FABO,

I have been doing some research on here, and have found some relevant threads but don't see the answer I'm looking for.

I'm building a '70 Duster. I picked up bucket seats from a '72 Duster. I have already mounted them in the car, so I know the seat tracks are good (although I do have a question about them, that's coming in another post).

My question is about the seat foam vs seat frame.

I have:
1970 seat covers
1972 seat frames
I'm getting ready to buy the seat foams

Obviously, the seat covers will work with '70 seat foams.
But will the '70 foams work with the '72 seat frames?
Or, would I be better off working the '70 seat covers onto '72 foams (A/B/E body) which should work with the frames?

I appreciate any help you can give.

I think in 1972, the seats were a different animal. 1972 utilized foam back construction vs the earlier spring back seats. I was unaware that the '72 seat foams were being reproduced.

Yeah, I'm not sure the 72 A body foams are being re-popped. But the B and E bodies look close, that's what I was making reference to when I mentioned making it work with 72 foams. Maybe some trimming here and there, I don't know.

The shapes of the foam have to fit the seat covers. If you go to Legendary interiors web site you can compare the 72 and 70 seats and then look at the seat foams and their shape. In particular the shape around the headrests is really different and the bottoms in 70 have a bolster that goes all around the front, where the 72 Duster seems to have side bolsters but none in the front. I think PG Classic or PUI are the only ones that sell foam for side bolster only foams. Get ready for sticker shock.

A good automotive upholstery shop will make the foam or rebuild yours when they install the covers. I did this for one of my cars. They carved the foam blocks with a hot knife and shaped until the foam fit the cover.
A lot of people don’t want to pay for that service as recovering the seats is a job that can be done by someone with better than novice skills. But that, headliners and engine machine work I personally leave to a professional. Money well spent.
